’She’s come undone She didn’t know what she was headed for,” or why Dominique Strauss-Kahn may be president of France after all!

Smart Tips For Your Personal And Business Success Today……….’She’s come undone She didn’t know what she was headed for,” or why Dominique Strauss-Kahn may be president of France after all!
By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Author’s program note. In 1969 The Guess Who recorded a catchy little number, an insidious bit of fluff that all of a sudden you find yourself whistling in a crowded elevator. Tunes can grab you that way, you know;this one surely does… and its catchy lyrics too. These lyrics are spot on for today’s article… for, verily, the  New York hotel maid at the center of this matter has well and truly come undone; the woman who hoped to put French presidential candidate Strauss-Kahn away may be headed that way herself whilst the man she charged may end up in the Elysee Palace yet. It’s one of the greatest political stories ever.  After you’ve found the tune in any search engine and listened to it a couple of times, you’ll be ready to dig into this…Adam and Eve-like, it all started with one man and one woman. So far, both parties agree. Any other facts they can agree on? Just this: that she was the maid…. and came to clean and fluff the gentleman’s room in the New York hotel where he was staying. The parties agree on nothing else, thereby proving yet again what every crime author knows: that when there are only two people who know the facts, not only will they not agree… but the truth will be crushed amidst the endless charges and counter charges as the story morphs so that what each eye witness says bears absolutely no resemblance to what  the other is saying.  Still, we can make some very educated deductions.1) Dominique Strauss-Kahn, head of the International Monetary Fund until May 18, 2011is accustomed to hanging out with heads of state, ministers of finance, and the highest-level diplomats. Thus he was probably up to no good that fateful day of the incident; that’s why he was staying where he was staying. Covering his tracks that day was a priority;after all, he was a candidate for President de la Republique.2) He may well have jumped out of his bathroom stark naked, the better to impress the object of his (very temporary) affections; if so, it shows a man-deluded by his magnitude, for truly with that embonpoint, his salad days are well andtruly over. But you must remember, he was surrounded by flunkies always atthe ready to say, “Oui, m. le ministre….” 3) The maid, who says she was raped,  was not the blushing rose originally portrayed… she may have had financial gain on the brain. This would have beenthe more shocking had not every denizen of Manhattan been conniving theirown chicaneries that day.  Hey, it’s not cheap to live in the Big Apple, and you’vegot to get those bucks however you can… So may the maid have reckoned whena very big fish with unlimited financial resources at his disposal fell in her net.No wonder she started dreaming big… and talking fast.First, in her mandated role as “good girl”, she told her employers. Now, remember, this is Manhattan and every man except for a couple of thugs on 42nd Street havenow been trained in the rudiments of feminist philosophy. This is especially trueof all law enforcement personnel. These now lean over backwards  to accommodate the woman. After all they definitely don’t want Gloria Allred, Esq., feminist avenger,on their tails. Anything but that…Thus, when Manhattan district attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. and his prosecutingteam were made aware of this matter (which happened, you’ll remember, with record-breaking celerity), they may have had this paradigm in mind: big man rapeshelpless woman of color, then hightails it back to Paris (of all places),  there toresume his privileged life of luxury, excess, and deceptions. Oh, yes, that manHAD to be stopped or, by golly, he’d be President of France and it would be THEIR fault. And so, in the best tradition of those fast-moving films about high level  treacheryand intrigue, the arresting agent grabbed Dominique Strauss-Kahn in his first-class seat, just as the doors were closing on his freedom flight to Paris… whew! They had their culprit… and the media of the world endlessly ran the arrest photos of the manwell ahead  in the race to become titan of Europe, preserver of la belle France and itsimmemorial traditions, confidant of God.As these photos ran, Dominique’s “friends” did, too… After all, he had a long traditionas an aggressive skirt-chaser; he’d had problems before. Thus, his IMF colleaguesfired him at once… showing their sensitivity by appointing a woman, Christine LaGarde, as his successor. Things reached a low indeed, the most abject low, when Strauss-Kahnwas shackled, just like a drug lord with decapitations on his rap sheet…  the prosecutorshad their man and they made the most of his humiliation and their triumph. But it all rested on the testimony of one woman…. and here in was the weakness. The more they questioned the maid, the more nervous the prosecutors became.Item: 32 years old, she had committed a host of minor frauds, all designed to enhanceher new life in the United States. These frauds took place over the seven years sinceshe’d arrived from Guinea. She lied on immigration paperwork, cheated on her taxes, and misstated her income so she could get an apartment reserved for the poor.Item: Prosecutors acknowledged that there were “troubling” revelations and “glaring”inconsistencies in her various accounts. For instance, she lied about what happenedafter her encounter with Strauss-Kahn in his hotel room. She initially said that after shehad been attacked she waited in the hallway until Strauss-Kahn left the room. Shelater admitted that after the episode, she cleaned a nearby room, then returned toStrauss-Kahn’s suite. Only after that did she inform her employer. Item: (and perhaps the most telling of all), days after her testimony and her testimony alone had put Strauss-Kahn in the pokey, prosecutors knew this: a few days followingStrauss-Kahn’s arrest she had made a telephone call to her main squeeze. He helpedher fabricate a statement and memorize it. This included a false story that she hadbeen gang raped in Guinea. More troubling was the phone call where she suggested Strauss-Kahn was ripe for the plucking.  Her boyfriend was interested; after all in anArizona jail he had  time on his hands… and had to make up for the 400 pounds ofmarijuana which had been confiscated… He needed money, too.As the drip-drip-drip of inaccurate, misleading, false information came from themain, no longer a blushing rose, the case against  Strauss-Kahn waned. The manmay not have been, probably was not, innocent; but had the perfect accuser:one who handed him the grand gift of plausible deniability.  The judge released him……. to re-emerge, the cognoscenti say, as a prime presidential candidate again. If he pulls it off, it’ll be a tale of Second Coming import.  He’s bruised, of course, and he looked like what he is: an aging, rather inept lothario; that must be, theysay, his German side, so unchic. But he’s got a splendid ace in the hole… the picture of a dejected man, unnecessarily, humiliatingly shackled. That outraged the French who are just capable of electing Strauss-Kahn for spite; sticking it to New York, Washington, feminist zealots everywhere… and particularly Vance, Jr. and his rushto-judgement team.Vance mishandled this from the beginning. Why? Because he forgot that youare innocent until proven guilty and should be treated accordingly. That’s theAmerican way and it’s the right way.  If he’d gone ahead on this basis, he could have proceeded with his work, discovering the facts as they emerged. He didn’tdo this and so gave New York and its justice system a black eye. Now it’s toolate and he’s come undone.

My day started off great.  I woke up early and motivated to finally meet the CEO of my online home business which has helped me grow so much in knowledge of marketing using automation , history, and finally learning the art of writing good article content.
The drive was quite pleasant, for only being only 2 hours away from  the hotel where me and my wife were staying in Connecticut, while visiting family. As we entered the Cambridge area, wow was it beautiful and quite hard to navigate through all the one way streets and round abouts. I finally asked a local Cambridge man wearing a Boston Red Sox cap, “Can you tell me where Follen Street is located”?  He said “Its the last brick building on the right hand-side after the stairs”. I told him Happy New Year.
I walked towards the red, brick building and finally saw the correct number and was quite happy and looking forward to finally meeting Dr. Lant. As I rang his suite number, the door opened. I traveled towards the right hand side and took the elevator up 5 levels. When I turned the corner to enter, the first thing I saw was this vibrant and famous red room which he shows to the world online. The color and the contrast I saw when walking into his home would take any historians breath away.  He greeted me and shook my hand with a sincere look and smile and told me and my wife please come in.  Dr. Lant, as you know is a noted Historian and has at his home a life-like museum which has taken him over 20 years to procure. All of his collection worth millions.  Our tour started in the blue room, which is where he keeps his office. We were being very careful not to lean against or brush into any of his collection. This room was so vibrant, it felt like we were walking at a Hollywood Red carpet event.  The chandelier is the highlight of the room.  It was completely made of sparking diamonds.  When you first come into the room you see his computer monitor and next to it all his papers from which his masterful articles come to life for the whole world to see. This is where he sits and works his magic from 4:30 in the morning till 4:00 pm everyday. He has these beautiful columns made of rare marble and topped with gold. Finally the emperors chair, as we call it, is not a fancy chair but a sturdy black wooden chair with a pillow for his back.
Proceeding to the next area he has pictures of all the head of states autographed and in protected frames.  The paintings, from the 16-18 century, come to life as you stare at them.  There were these emperors chairs that were well restored and the stitching was something you will never see in your lifetime. As we continue on, he told us history of each piece of his collection down to these beautifully detailed clocks of pure silver and gold.  He has a special hand-picked team help him restore each and every piece of his living museum.
After the tour, Dr. Lant and I were helping get some lunch ready for all of us.  It consisted of Tempered Shrimp, and some yummy looking pigs in a blanket. I was offered some Sherry with cream and it went down your throat smooth and warmed your entire belly.
Dr. Lant wanted us to take pictures of his collection while he was broadcasting live to the world, helping our thousands of members and growing globally with closing of sales. So I started in the red room and started snapping shot after shot of all of his collections. As I was waiting for my que to come into the blue room, I was taking pictures of Dr. Lant broadcasting to the world. I spoke with my wife and explained to her what he was doing and we were saying to each other “he surely does have a passion for reaching out to people and in a direct but sincere manner”.  His words are cutting edge like a sword, but reach up and grab your attention with every sentence coming out of his mouth. The live web-cast was 20 minutes long. As we listened to each sentence coming out of his mouth, we could truly tell he loves helping others to become not only better marketers, but better well cultured people.
Dr. Lant called to me and said you will be sitting in my chair in 15 minutes. As the time approaches, I was nervous but excited to share with the world what I had seen so far.  His chair was comfortable and well positioned for the world to see the first ever Monitor who came to visit the good Dr. Lant and his collections.
As I spoke into the mike it was just like me broadcasting from my home but without all the vibrant colors and sitting in the CEO’s Emperor’s chair as we call it.  My voice was sharing what I could remember since arriving into Dr. Lant’s world.   The time flew by as I shared my experience with the world on what 2011 will be like for all the World Profit Dealers globally. So hold on to your seats everyone and get ready to have your world rocked with automation is what I said, and thanked Dr. Lant, George Kosch, and finally Sandy Hunter for helping me  and others make a nice residual income which keeps on growing following a proven system.
Dr Lant, then took over and shared what he thought about all of what I said and thanks me for coming up live to the world to share my experience. We all decided after a long day that it was time to conclude our day with a nice dinner at a local hotel, less than  1 block away from his home. Dr. Lant spoke to us while  we carefully navigated the snow and ice of the red brick walkway and was  explaining each detail of all the historic events within the
Cambridge area in detail. We all entered the restaurant and Dr.Lant was greeted by all the staff members with respect and admiration as we were seated.   The conversation ranged from history, religion and finally asked Dr. Lant about where he thought World-profit’s were going in 2011 and he said just wait and see what George has in store for you and all the members.  I was thinking to myself while seated, this seemed surreal that I was here with the CEO of the company that I work with online.  This is unprecedented in the history of Internet Marketing. I just smiled and thought feel so blessed to be in the presence of a pioneer online.
As we sat down and talked, I could tell he was enjoying the dinner and the company as we were following along with all he was saying. For all the nay-sayers who don’t like Dr. Lant and call  him a scam artist,  he is quite frankly  an honest business man.   My first impression of the him is that he is sincere and wants to help anyone who wants to invest time and effort into any of his or her businesses online.  So stop the negative press, you’re only helping him write more articles and get more exposure for the company.
In closing, as I had a private goodbye with Dr. Lant, I shared  my thoughts and told him my wife enjoyed the experience but fully didn’t understand why I do what I do and why this was so important to me. He said, most of the wives who have husbands who work online, feel at times that the business is taking away from their family time.  When in reality, it is helping create more time for your family. As I was about to leave, Dr. Lant gave me a nice fatherly hug and told me to drive safe and was looking forward to my next visit to Cambridge. He told me you’re well on your way to becoming a millionaire.  Keep up the work you do as Senior Monitor and you are positioned for success online now. Walking away, I was so blown away and felt so empowered that the CEO thought that much about me. This article shows each and everyone of you who is struggling online that dreams can come true and that through having the right system and education the world is your oyster.
Thank you,

‘There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.’ The watery end of bright-smiled Marie Joseph and her unsettling fate.

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
It is high summer in Fall River, Massachusetts, once a focal point of American commerce and the most elegant of sailing ships, now a city defined by its gnawing problems and of people who arrive only to count the days until they leave this way station to something better.
Many of these new arrivals are Hispanic and the place where the most adamant of New Englanders flourished is now a place where often the language is Spanish and the orientation Latin. How surprised the mariners of Massachusetts would have been… but even they, unhappily seeing the transformation of their works, would have looked twice at the radiant smile of Marie Joseph, the kind of smile that lightens loads, brings people together, and holds them together when it’s needed, as it always is.
Marie Joseph graced lives, she did not impose upon them. Such people are too rare… always valued…. the sinews on which all communities rely, especially the ones which seem to have more than their share of problems.
The new arrivals, not yet ascending to country club status, rely on the plethora of municipal services which, in this year 2011, are stressed, pressured, threatened, deteriorating. But more needed than ever… especially if that service is the state-run swimming pools that provide relief on the so-hot summer days you always forget are a sweltering feature of summer hereabouts.
The thought of the beckoning pool, aqua marine, cool, refreshing, a blessing to folks without air conditioning is just what Marie Joseph wanted… and so, arrayed in that smile that wouldn’t quit, she made her way to the modern city’s version of the old swimming hole. In the last picture of Marie Joseph, taken the day before she died (June 26, 2011) her smile is incandescent, radiant, cast on the child in her arms with plenty left over for the rest of the world.
That image should have defined the event and the day, a happy memory in a life of challenges and tribulations… Instead, that image stands as irony, proof (if it were ever needed) that life is short, can never be taken for granted, and can end in ways inexplicable and horrifying… as it was about to do for Marie Joseph.
The water slide took her down indeed, to the conclusion of a brief life, just 36 years.
She saw the water slide. It looked fun… especially as she watched a nine-year-old neighbor go down the slide accompanied by the full panoply of quips, expressions, and ear-shattering squeals all kids horde for just such events. She was game. You had to take your fun when and where you could.
As she slid down the water slide into death and eternity, no one (except the nine-year-old) paid any attention. No need. That water slide was popular and no one gave it a second thought. But this day something went terribly wrong… while people who should have seen saw nothing… or at least they say so now…
The first horror: death by drowning, surrounded by people.
Marie Joseph may have known how to swim; her friends and family are not sure. She didn’t ask. Why should she; she had watched her young friend use the slide joyously; she probably didn’t know the water was 12 feet deep. Once in the water, Marie was in trouble… and must have made a fearful racket as anyone would as they faced the reality of their situation and fought for life. How could this death struggle happen before so many… with only one person, her young neighbor doing anything to assist?
He at least knew something was wrong and tried to pull Marie up, to safety; and when he failed, he called upon the lifeguard for assistance. But demi-god in his Ray Bans, he had better things to do than his job; ignoring kids’ babble was part of what made him so cool and exalted.
Here the story goes from tragedy to the macabre, from one family’s grief to an enduring symbol of ineptitude, scandal, and staggering incompetence.
Marie Joseph was now dead… but no one knew it…
The friends she came with wondered where she had gone; something no doubt had come up; she’d tell them later. And so the sunburnt children wanting more… and their mothers who had had enough, all went home…
… leaving the body of Marie Joseph entombed in water, her raven tresses in constant movement under the water under the summer’s night. And so on this cheerful day did Marie Joseph pass a night peaceful perhaps for her, but of mounting worry and concern for her family and friends. Where had she and her radiant smile gone?
Business as usual.
The next day was business as usual… the kids came to swim and scream, the mothers to watch and gossip, complaining about the temperature and how hot it was; the lifeguard, high above, looked down on the scene and wondered if his girl was cheating on him, of all people.
And throughout this day, mere feet below the teaming activity, the lifeless body of Marie Joseph moved to the water’s beat, its whereabouts known only to God. Yes, on this evening, too, and throughout the stages of the night, did her unseeing eyes abide in their incomprehensible resting place.
And, though its staggers belief, it went on for another day… another day with the corpse swimming with youngsters… and where chary mothers saw nothing… and lifeguards with plum summer jobs, envied, yet saw absolutely nothing.
And still the story worsens, morphing from the shocking to the incredible.
Now officials, making a periodic visit, appeared. Despite the inexplicable disappearance of Marie Joseph, now common gossip, these officials made only the most cursory of inspections… not one suspecting that the pool itself and its cloudy waters held the body. Like everyone else but one small boy they looked… and saw nothing, though the corpse of a beautiful woman was dissolving into debris….
… which teams of lifeguards missed and even the people charged daily with inspecting the pool, cleaning it, keeping the waters fresh and clear. Add these, too, to the staggering number who should have seen… but say they did not.
Now, of course, alarm bells ringing in the face of widespread condemnation, officials great and small come slowly forward, mutter platitudes, and run for cover. A tiny fraction of this energy would easily have saved the life of Marie Joseph or at least given her honorable burial, sparing her from becoming a thing of horror and nightmare. For such she has become, no longer the beloved person she was but a fearful presence for the children who now see a place of sun, light, air and shimmering water as a place of dread and abhorrence, wondering what else they may find there.
Marie Joseph did not deserve her fate. Let some poignant lines from Alfred, Lord Tennyson, provide her one better:
“Who is this? and what is here? And in the lighted palace near Died the sound of royal cheer; And they cross’d themselves for fear, All the knights at Camelot: But Lancelot mused a little space;
He said, “She has a lovely face; God in his mercy lend her grace, The Lady of Shalott.” (1842).

Of ‘sliders’, ‘cravers,’ and a White Castle where you are monarch of all.

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
It is the midnight hour here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in Cambridge town. And like my overindulged neighbors, I am in search of something to satisfy a craving, for without satisfaction I shall not sleep. As this is a college town, the ultimate college town, with every kind of taste and flavor readily at hand, all ready to obliterate the hunger pangs of the privileged, voracious herds of students foraging hereabouts, there should be no trouble getting that precise, desired effect.
But the taste I seek cannot be found in Cambridge, or Boston, or even in the whole of New England or even beyond. It is a taste rooted in the Midwest and, thus, I need stratagems to find it… all the while my brain, sharpened by exact desire, screams for the thing, the exact thing, no substitutions, no deceptions, no facsimiles, don’t even try.
This is White Castle… don’t even begin to call it just a ‘hamburger.”
And if you have never had one, do not condescend to judge us who have. We know this thing… and if we are in thrall to a taste… we at least have had it, while you have not and do not know.
This, then, is for my fellow “cravers”… you know who you are… and you know what I am going through now… for you may well be going through it, too…
Born in the heartland.
Harry Truman, sometime president of these United States, once said, “There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.” I am going to dish up some of that history now.
The White Castle story begins in Wichita, Kansas. It is 1921… America is confident, striding for the first time on the world stage; a heady adolescent among nations… strong, swaggering, a bull in Europe’s epicene china shop. Such a nation, still raw, required food to match. It needed wheat…. and beef… and onions… it was democratic fare… cheap, pungent, delicious, pay your nickle and, laughing with your buddies, wipe your mouth on your sleeve; (your mother cannot see the infraction, so shocking at home.)
The White Castle story is a story of lean, young men, with big ideas; applying science and brains to the hunger of a nation moving to a jazz beat. In such a nation everything was possible… and a young man in Wichita was free to dream and to build and to triumph. In Wichita that year, in America, there was nothing but exuberance, pulsating energies and panoramas of promise.
White Castle aimed to be the fuel for such a people and their ascendancy. And so it began…
Item: White Castle was the first fast-food hamburger chain in the nation.
Item: The first to sell a million hamburgers.
Item: The first to sell a billion hamburgers.
Item: The first to sell frozen fast food.
Founders Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson had an idol… a man of drive, energy, imagination and, always, the ability and desire to improve, make the product better, and grow.
This was Henry Ford, and the founders of White Castle never stopped scrutinizing the Master for ways they could benefit and, in turn, benefit the nation.
“The Jungle”.
The first problem the founders had to solve was one of perception. In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote one of the signal books of the burgeoning republic, “The Jungle”. It was a book inducing anger and nausea, exposing in sickening detail the revolting conditions of the meat packing industry. America blanched and heaved… cleaning up the noisome menace…
The Wichita boys did their bit. They named their baby “White” for something clean, pure and untainted… and “Castle” for something strong and resolute.
Then they started their life-long mission of mechanizing their work, just as Henry Ford was doing at River Rouge.
Their restaurants, made to resemble the famed Chicago Water Tower, were eye-catching, distinctive, octagonal buttresses, crenelated towers, and a parapet wall. Here, well before Huey Long, “every man was king.” The look was pristine, sparkling white porcelain enamel on steel exteriors, stainless steel interiors, employees outfitted with spotless uniforms… never sprinkled with the blood of what you were eating.
Now they could turn their full attention to the most important thing of all… the taste.
First, Founder Anderson invented the hamburger bun, as well as the kitchen assembly line that gave rise to the modern fast-food industry. Due to White Castle’s innovation of chain-wide standardized methods, customers could be sure they would receive the same product in every one of their restaurants; here, too, they lead the way, as they embarked on sure and certain growth.
Since nothing of the mechanized fast-foot industry existed, it all had to be imagined, attempted, instituted, tried, and re-tried, the tested way of progress for people unafraid to risk, to attempt, to improve, and improve some more. It was the American way, and it was a certain formula for greatness.
White Castle, and the hamburger at its center, was a significant part of this glorious cycle of never-ending improvement.
Anderson developed an efficient method for cooking hamburgers, using freshly ground beef and fresh onions. The ground beef was formed into balls by machine, eighteen to a pound, or forty per kilogram. The balls were placed on a hot grill and topped with a handful of fresh, thinly shredded onion. Then they were flipped so that the onion was under the ball.
The ball was then squashed down, turning the ball into a very thin patty. The bottom of the bun was then placed atop the cooking patty with the other half of the bun on top of that so that the juices and steam from the beef and onion would permeate the bun. After grilling, a slice of dill pickle was inserted before serving on its distinctive square bun available at White Castle only. This was the famous “slider”.
Now, putting it all together, you didn’t just have a burger and fries… you had an event, a feast for nose, eye, tongue and brain. You stopped at other burger joints because you were hungry and couldn’t wait any longer for relief at someplace better. You went to White Castle for satisfaction, gratification, bliss.
On this basis White Castle grew, keeping its price, a dime apiece, fair, affordable. Then, in 1933, Ingram bought out Anderson, moving to Columbus, Ohio. The new owner refused to franchise or take on debt to expand, and so White Castle fell behind other purveyors of burgers, relatively small at 420 White Castle outlets; the one I visited assiduously when I studied at Harvard, in Central Square, bit the dust, to my acute despair.
Somewhere along the line the unyielding insistence on growth, improvement, and no limits whatsoever, died. When I called White Castle’s corporate offices yesterday to see how I could buy the product by mail, the voice at the other end of the line was of the “couldn’t be bothered” variety, dismissive, unhelpful, eager to get me off the line and go back to her nails and jeremiads. Thus the dedicated, devoted “cravers” of company lore are cast aside and dismissed. And so as White Castle goes, the once great nation goes… and we are saddened and bereft.

I chose life… and so should you. 347,000,000 adults now diagnosed with diabetes. How one man’s story can help you at once!

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
The number of adults with diabetes worldwide has more than doubled in three decades, to an estimated 347 million a new study says. The study, led by Goodarz Danaei of the Harvard School of Public Health and Majid Ezzati of Imperial College, London, analyzed diabetes data from 1980 to 2008. Their analysis found that 153 million people had diabetes in 1980; this number had swelled to 347 million in 2008.
Much of that increase is due to aging populations — since diabetes typically hits in middle age — and population growth, but part of it has also been fueled by rising obesity rates.
With numbers climbing almost everywhere, experts said the disease is no longer limited to rich countries and is now a global problem. Countries in which the numbers rose fastest include Cape Verde, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea, and the United States.
More alarming news.
These figures do not reflect the generations of overweight children and young adults who have yet to reach middle age. This will create a massive burden on already severely challenged health systems.
The most alarming news of all… Each of these people could take charge of their disease, but too often don’t, thereby triggering even graver health problems.
“A disease of the mouth.”
I like to say, tongue firmly in cheek, that diabetes is a disease of the mouth: open mouth, insert enough of the wrong things, get disease and all its myriad of complications. I should know; I’m one of the world’s aging diabetics. Now 64, I was diagnosed about 50.
The day my blunt, most direct physician delivered the news he asked me one question: “Do you want to live longer or shorter?” I chose longer; he then laid on me exactly what I needed to do to achieve the objective of more time and that of the highest quality. While hardly an ideal patient, I was more than willing to make the necessary changes in diet and lifestyle. Not only willing but committed and determined to do so. Once over 205 chunky pounds, my 5? 10 1/2? frame is now a lean 157 pounds… with all other numbers appropriate; something to write home about, especially since I can wear the same trousers I wore in graduate school 40 years ago! Can you?
What I have learned along the way.
I want to say, right from the get-go, that I am NOT playing physician here; you need to consult yours at regular intervals as I do. Still, diabetes seems to me a disease tailor-made for personal management. There are things, lots of things, you can do to improve your situation. Here’s what works for me:
1) Take ownership of your disease and decide whether you want to gamble with your life by doing little or nothing.
The great thing about diabetes is that its improvement or deterioration is very much in your hands. If you take charge in a positive, pro-active manner you are going to improve. if you persist in fighting your diagnosis and what you can do, right at home, too, you won’t. In other words, you can be adult about it… or select adolescent petulance.
2) Don’t try to change everything overnight; do start making changes at once. Remember, diabetes and what you do to manage it is a marathon, not a sprint. This is a disease without (just yet) a cure; it’s a disease that’s with you sleeping and waking. You cannot, therefore, do something today and then ignore it. With diabetes you’re fighting a war, not a battle. Treat it accordingly.
3) Clean out your cupboards… clean out your refrigerator.
If you don’t have readily at hand the destructive things… the high sugar drinks, the cakes and bakery goods… all the things that work against your success and create long-term problems, so much the better.
If you don’t have readily at hand the bad things and have to make a special effort to go out and get them, you will, perforce, ingest less.
4) Don’t think in terms of diets and deprivations. Think in terms of the additional life and time you’re getting.
We live in a culture that screams “I want this and I want this NOW!” We are all influenced by the “I’m worth it and I’m going to have it” mentality. Thus you need practical ways to overcome these insidious influences.
To start with, never call what you’re doing a “diet”. Diets are about depriving yourself; think instead of buying your life back from the pawn shop. When you eat bad things you’re cutting time off your life; when you make the necessary changes, you buy yourself back.
5) Count to 10.
Before you drink that sugary concoction or take another bite of your favorite confection, count to 10. This gives your brain time to remind you that you probably can live without the indiscretion you are about to make. The sequence goes like this: want. stop. count to 10.
Now, if you do this and still eat the offending morsel, even two, don’t collapse with guilt and recrimination. Just resolve to do better next time… because you can be sure there WILL be a next time, and many such.
6) Eat all day.
Still eating big, set meals that leave you breathless and bloated? These constitute an assault on the body. Stop it now!
Instead eat frequently throughout the day, small portions that satisfy and which your previously overworked body can handle.
Start eating fresh fruit… nuts… small snacks of maximum protein and nutrition, minimum sugars, calories, carbohydrates. Make the portions small but make their ingestion frequent. Your body knows its work. Don’t overfeed… graze instead. All day long.
7) Make breakfast your most important meal.
You’ve got a lot to accomplish today. You’re going to need a lot of energy and stamina. Thus, you must make breakfast your most important meal. Don’t even dream of stinting here. Breakfast constitutes the launching pad for a successful day. Treat it accordingly. By comparison never, ever eat your biggest meal at the end of the day or evening. Your body can’t handle it and shouldn’t have to try.
Before bed, give yourself a snack, fruit (raisons are always a treat), popcorn. You get the idea. Go to bed satisfied, sleep satisfied, wake up in productive good humor.
You’ll start seeing — and feeling — results at once.
The great thing about managing your diabetes is that if you follow these sensible suggestions, you’ll start seeing results at once. For one thing (and very gratifying it is) your weight will start to drop… reverting to your body’s natural weight. And as you see and feel that occurring, you’ll be spurred to keep on truckin’, towards the Promised Land.
As you go, as you achieve results, reward yourself. You deserve it, not least because you are doing what every one of the 347 million afflicted should be doing… but aren’t. Now that you are on your way to success, print this article and share it with a friend. It’s one of the privileges of your improved situation and state of mind. Use it… and help someone you know and love. Someday they’ll throw their arms around you and tell you you saved their life. And it’ll be true…
