By Dr. Jeffrey Lant.
Author’s program note. I can’t stand it another minute, Poopsie. I just cannot stand by and let you fail for even one more minute. Because today, like yesterday, and all the days before, you are going to fail; you are not going to make a single penny from that joke you call your online “business”.
Instead by day’s end when you’ve racked up another day of chump change, you’ll be worse off… a day wasted, a precious day you could have used to get ahead, now in the cosmic trash can… clueless on how to get out and make the money you say you want. Look at yourself closely in the mirror right now… that’s one poor puppy staring back at you…. pale, wan, hapless, helpless, pathetic, disgusting. And this is the guy you expect to lead the victory parade? LOL! LOL! LOL!It’s time for your Internet marketing make-over… It’s time to own up to and grasp what you are doing (the stuff that doesn’t work) and what you must do (if you expect to have any chance of online success at all).
Let’s get started with a cool tune that pretty well summarizes the mess you’rein, the mess you’ll stay in if you don’t follow sensible advice and make a radical change.”"Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It”) Go to any search engine now. Find the tune and set it on the highest decibels, for you’re about to fly. Put up your collar… find those ultra cool shades you sheepishly wore just once… wear them like the symbol of insolence and impertinence they were meant to be … now move that arthritic body… for babeeeeee, you are about to astonish the world; Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers — plus one extra guy looking remarkably like… me — are about to help you out of the sad situation you just can’t seem to shake .The song is “Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It”). Recorded in (1971, it was what rock was all about… attitude… edge… in your face… don’t tread on me, maggot…stand back world and prepare to be astonished, I’ve got the ticket to ride. Now belt out the lyrics that pretty much summarize your entire Internet experience…”Looks like I’ve been fooled again/ Looks like I’m the fool again/ I don’t like it,I don’t like it.”Now hear this… you’re not just singing a tune… you’re announcing the advent ofthe new regime… the regime where you’re a successful online marketer, not just some luckless schlepper, kick-me sign always on your back side, the guy it’s oh-so-easy to ridicule, disdain, and dismiss.
You can always feel sorry for these toads, but you can never, ever respect them. And that’s why you don’t just need to scream “I don’t like it”. You’ve got to do something to turn the fiasco you call Internet marketing around… and at once!Try these suggestions on for size.
1) STOP doing what you’re doing. It doesn’t work. Can’t work. And the silliest thing is that you ever thought it would work. The great thing about the ‘net is how easily you can test your ideas, thoughts and suppositions to see how well they work, indeed to see whether they work at all. For you see, something that doesn’t work today is not going to work tomorrow. Thus, experimentation is and must always be the order of the day, every day. If you won’t test, you won’t succeed.
2) Get trained. In my role as an Internet success counselor at worldprofit.com I have had occasion to train, work with, and nudge thousands of people worldwide over the last 20 years.Nudge? What that means is not just setting the objective and teaching folks how to achieve it… but to keep each student’s nose to the grindstone, keeping them focused, accepting absolutely no excuses, including absolutely no “special pleading”where the candidate offers “reasons” why she didn’t do what she was pledged to do: following each and every step, no ifs, ans, or buts.
Your nudge is an essential part of your success team, and though I say it myself, I am the best nudge on Earth, the least easy to deceive and hide from, unrelenting, never losing sight of the goal, more determined to see you successful than absolutely anyone except your mother. You’d be exceptionally lucky to work with me, and that’s a fact. So, I ask you. Who’s helping you set goals, brainstorm means of reaching them, reviewing results to see what worked and what didn’t, and always ensuring you stay on track? Yeah, I thought so. You’re not doing it, no one is helping you do it.You’re not focused on results, no one is helping you get focused. Thus your results are non existent, just the way they have have always been. What an embarrassment!Have you got any self-respect?
3) You have no list and are not doing the consistent, strenuous work it takes to grow one. This one’s a real killer. For the last over 40 years now I’ve been telling my students, beating it into their often amazingly resistant brains that “the list is the business, the business is the list.”How important is your list? Say there’s a fire in your office. What would you grab first to save? Inventory? No, inventory is easily replaceable. Your computer? No worry here. Easily replaceable again. (You do back up, don’t you?) That picture of your mother-in-law; you know the one that confirms her near perfect resemblance to a rare genus of ancient lizard? (Please try to be serious.) The correct answer, of course, is your list. It is essential, irreplaceable, unique. It’s loss would be catastrophic, a body blow from which you might never recover. And that is why “the list is the business, the business is the list.” The $64,000 question just this. What did you do today to build your list and turn it into the huge money-making tool you require to make the big bucks you say you want and haven’t got a clue how to get. Self-deception, self-deceit, self-delusion. This is what you’re specializing in and your thread-bare results give ample testament about just how successful you’ve been… and will always be. That better make you happy, because that, lamb chop, is what you’re going to get.
4) How are your copy-writing skills? Can you write the words that dance and thrill, the words that make people from Alabama to Beijing jump up and shout, causing even the deadest heart to beat faster, faster, faster still? You’d better be, because otherwise you’re in for a lifetime of significance expense, because top copywriters command top dollars… the dollars that come straight out of your pocket; so sad for you but absolutely necessary if you expect to have ad copy that pulls the more lucrative response.Of course knowing you, you’ll try to conjure the magic words yourself; anything to save a penny. But that, as you’ll quickly learn, just won’t cut it… words without the wizard’s leger demain, without the magic, produce dismal results… and that just won’t do unless you like endless outflow and driblets of income, few and far between. This is your certain fate when you turn down demonstrated experts and attempt to do their crucial job yourself. Sucker.
5) Trying to build a money-making business off of “free”? Are you one of the hundreds of millions of would-be entrepreneurs online this very moment who is making — and every single day, too — the critical, fatal error of trying to make money off “free stuff” to be found online? If so, listen up. That is IMPOSSIBLE,can’t be done, and only wastes your time and energy. Did you hear me? The extent to which you want Internet success without reasonable investment is the extent to which you will fail, absolutely, positively. Now for the real craziness. Day after futile day would-be entrepreneurs and Internet marketers enter the Live Business Center at Homeprofitcoach.com/associates. They are told, clearly, honestly, politely, thoroughly what they need for success…and go right out to do the EXACT reverse, ensuring failure, DOA. The Internet has empowered these sad creatures, each a candidate for spam, rip-off and certain loss. Why does this happen to so many so often with such miserable results? Because the typical ‘net entrepreneur is the very model of sloth, laziness, avarice. They want wealth without effort; magnificent results without knowing how to get them; falling victim over and over again to those who find victimizing these foolish people a piece of cake; integrity, honesty and old fashioned business standards and acumen the first to perish in such a pernicious environment; once gone, gone forever.Must it be this way? Certainly not. Failure as much as success is a choice. Now it’s time for you. Visit me in the Live Business Center at worldprofit.com where we work together in a giant worldwide team so that you have expert assistance 24/7/365 advising, counseling, guiding, reassuring, all accomplished in an environment of professionalism and good fellowship. This is the proven way to substantial financial wealth, a unique place online for people who have not hitherto seen such benefits, much less so fast or certain. It’s good, isn’t it, to “see you think so much of me”?

Summertime is over… and your lax summertime business habits should be over, too. Make sure they are!

September 7, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Dr. Jeffrey Lant’s Article Archive

Lotte Lenya
By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
The summer of 2011 ended (unofficially) in the United States on Labor Day, as it always does; this year it fell on September 5th. If you’re like me you jumped up on your desk and did your happy dance, delighted to see the back of the worst summer most of us can remember… distinguished as it was by wars, earthquakes, hurricanes, a punk economy that just refuses to get better, much less take off… oh, yes, and the visits of sundry relatives who would have made you happier by arriving later and leaving earlier. It was indeed a memorable summer… for all the wrong reasons.
Under the circumstances it’s not surprising you pulled the covers over your head more often than you’d like us to know and played possum with your responsibilities.
Now hear this: that was then, this is now and your lax summertime habits must now be filed under “good old days”, superceded at once and fully by the crackerjack habits which ought to distinguish your enterprise.
Fall counts the most!
For most businesses, the fourth quarter of the year is the most profitable. This means every day matters and you need to keep this objective in mind at all times. A famous 1938 song by Kurt Weill (lyrics by Maxwell Anderson) will assist, “September Song.” You ought to play it every day, since the haunting tune and classic words remind you that the days for profit are dwindling down, each one more precious at its end than the last.
Go to any search engine and find the rendition you like most. I prefer the version by Lotte Lenya. She knew Weill pretty well; at least, she married him twice so she probably got extra help.
Here are the adjustments and refinements you must make at once and completely if you expect to be one of the diminished number of business people making profits this year.
1) Adjust your offer. Offers are what make businesses money, and if you want increased sales this quarter, you’d better beef up your offer — at once.
Now hear this: everybody’s not broke! Everybody’s not unemployed! Everybody’s not about to lose their home through foreclosure, etc. It’s just there are far too many good people in these conditions, thereby reducing the number of people who are amply provisioned, have good jobs, fine homes with mortgages up to date, etc., the kinds of people who, as consumers, keep the economy rattling along.
As a result, you have fewer people in your prospect pool… and must work the smarter to motivate them to respond and ultimately buy the item in question that comes with the very best offer you have ever made.
Have you upgraded your autumn offer? If not, you’re still on summertime laxities and are heading for penury.
2) Increase your product line and retire the dogs.
If you didn’t spend the summer improving and augmenting your product line, then A) you are well and truly behind the eight ball and B) you don’t “get” the purpose of summer: it is to do the necessary work, especially in regards to beefing up your product line. In other words, summer is the antechamber to enhanced autumn profits.
One thing this entails is taking a good, careful look at products which are either marginally profitable, or just not profitable at all. These canines must be sent packing, to the old dogs home. Did you so scrutinize your product line in summer? Or were you either clueless, or just plain bone idle? Either way, you’ve got crucial work to attend to, and you’re already lagging.
3) Improve your prospect and customer follow-up procedures.
In summer when a business person says they will attend to the customer’s weighty matter “today”, “tomorrow,” or “next Thursday,” what they mean is they’ll get around to it when the staff isn’t minimized by seasonal vacations and after they themselves have had theirs. Prospects, influenced by the slower rhythms of the summer season, understand that today means “when we can get around to it” some unspecified tomorrow.
But, pray recall, you are not in the slow paced summer anymore. Thus if you want the sale and the profits, you’d better re-educate yourself on the proper meaning of the words you say. Thus, when you say to a customer, “I’ll get back to you on that,” you are in the process of losing a sale. You should instead say, “Ms. Smythe, I will get back to you tomorrow by end of business, 5 pm.” Then do it. One of the worst sins of summertime business folk is vagueness about what they will do for their customers and just when and how they will do it. This irritatingly cavalier approach to your business must not be allowed to creep into fall, although you may already be guilty.
4) Do a complete organizational review to see what you need and what you don’t.
As I said above, and here reiterate, summer is the handmaiden, the servant of autumn. Thus, when business wanes and the tempo diminishes from allegro to largo, you do not despair, but rather rejoice that you now have the time to review all procedures, all supplies, all machines and absolutely everything else you’ll need for the profitable fall you desire.
Did you so use the ambling days of summer to make sure everything you need for the profitable autumn of your imagining was in place? If not, shame on you… and get cracking on doing the necessary and ensuring you are the peak of organization, efficiency, procedures, the new and better in place, the outmoded and no longer useful trashed.
5) Spruce up your physical environment.
Does your office, your desk, your overall surroundings fit you like an old shoe? Charming. But have you considered what that shoe really looks like, battered, down at heel, worn looking indeed? Comfortable it may be… but the wrong image and inspiration altogether.
First impressions are crucial and should portray you at your best. As for second, third, fourth impressions, they are just first impressions to the nth degree. In short, the first impression must be brilliant… and every other impression, too.
Now look at your work space with its telltale signs of old coffee stains, well-worn carpets, scratched paint and chipped furniture. Is this really the image you wish to project… and do you actually think laboring within such an environment helps you achieve your objectives? An “old shoe” environment begets “old shoe” results. Think about it and make the necessary sprucing ups to the milieu in which you spend so much time and from whence your business successes emanate…
… and one more thing….
6) Set your specific, defined, measurable goals… then move like a bat out of Hell to achieve them.
Do you have objectives for the crucial fall quarter? Not just in your head but on paper, where you can consult, review, and adjust them?
Successful people are fanatics about getting objectives to be achieved by a given date… then going about the daily labor of achieving them. Like the physical environment improvements mentioned above, this is something you should have done during the comparable leisure of summer. Thus this swells the number of things you did not contemplate or do then… but which must be done now. It is a tax success demands… and which must now be paid by you and in full… or else.
And so it is well and truly time to bid farewell to Summer 2011 and get on with the thrilling business of ensuring you will end this year in prosperity, unlike so many who, failing to understand the work of summertime are now fated to diminished results this autumn, for you see as Lotte Lenya knew,
“When the Autumn weather turns the leaves to flame One hasn’t got time for the waiting game…”

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Author’s program note. I have found the perfect music to accompany this article. It is called “Washington’s March”. It is an elegant piece of 18th century music, balanced, refined, symmetrical, as suitable for a drawing room as for an afternoon’s review of the troops.
It reminds us that George Washington and all his officers were gentlemen born and bred, citizens of substance who undertook the pronounced hazard of revolution because that was the only way open to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” They risked everything…
You can find this tune in any search engine. It appears as part of a splendid collection entitled “Music of the American Revolution: The Birth of Liberty.” Sadly the composer of “Washington’s March” is unknown. He deserves recognition, too…
Steps to glory… or the gallows.
It is important to remember one thing about history: at the time it is actually occurring only God Himself knows the outcome. No person present can do anything more than speculate on what may happen. You must remember this, for the people you encounter in this article were each and every one making the most bold, audacious and rash decision of their lives when, on August 2, 1776 most of the delegates to the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall), signed the Declaration of Independence. William Whipple, one of the three representatives from New Hampshire, signed that day. We can imagine the scene…
Every man present, as his turn came to sign, would have had, must have had a moment of the utmost sobriety, even dread. He would have thought of the terrible risk he was taking to bring forth the new nation. His mind would have touched on the people he loved…. the people who loved and trusted him. As he moved up in the queue he could so clearly see the beloved aspects of his life, each and every one of them, now with his own signature in the most perilous danger.
But though there had to be profound reflections and profound anxiety, there was in that place, on that date, emanating from each man present and all the citizens there represented, a deep certainty that what they were doing was profoundly right, proper and necessary…. and as they took pen in hand, they wrote their names, if not so grandiloquently as John Hancock, yet with the same ringing belief…
They did this for liberty! For freedom! For the chance of some happiness in the shortness of life. And, most of all, to create a nation which would provide a living model, where the good of all would always be the goal, not the good of a few. They stood for a new way of governing men and arranging their affairs… they stood for a nation they insisted be great!
Thus did William Whipple, in sober reflection and invoking God’s will be done, sign the most important document in the short history of mankind, and, thus committed, did he resolve to strive, to turn brilliant rhetoric into vital reality.
About William Whipple, Jr., born January 14, 1730.
Whipple was born in Kittery, Maine, now famous for its many factory-outlet stores. He went to the sea, like so many Mainers, having studied in the common school the essentials necessary to become a merchant. He became a Ship’s Master by the age of twenty-three, and in 1759 moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire where he established a merchant partnership with his brother. In either 1770 or 1771 (the record is unclear) he married his first cousin Katherine Moffat; they must have been in love, and adamant, for such matches between those so closely related were not recommended. But, of course, without documentation, we can only speculate and may thereby deduce the wrong conclusion.
The people’s choice.
In 1775 Whipple, a well-established businessman of 45, was elected to represent his town at the Provincial Congress. In 1776 New Hampshire dissolved the Royal government and reorganized with a House of Representatives and an Executive Council. Whipple became a Council member, and a member of the Committee of Safety, and was elected to the Continental Congress, serving through 1779. There he was one of a group of men who worked hard, staying out of sight, achieving results, letting others take the credit. He was chairman of the marine, foreign relations and quartermaster committees and served on the committee which gathered intelligence on the British. Such a committee at such a time goes only to the most trusted of men.
While still in Congress, Whipple was appointed one of two brigadiers general; John Stark got the other appointment. The appointment came at a time of the utmost danger. The Americans had evacuated vital Fort Ticonderoga, the British having then taken it over. From this key strategic position, General “Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne meant to wreck havoc. General Whipple meant to ensure he didn’t.
Burgoyne was everything Whipple was not: a braggart, popinjay, condescending man who believed the Americans were there for one reason and one reason only: to provide him a step ladder to wealth, deference, renown. Whipple just got on with the job of defeating the man who never dreamt his defeat was possible. The result was the pivotal Battle of Saratoga, where the Americans not only defeated Burgoyne (thereby motivating France and Spain to enter the war on the side of the insurgents) but ended the Gentleman’s vainglorious career. He never had another military command; Whipple did. Appropriately, Whipple was accorded the honor of being one of the two American representatives assigned to working out the terms of capitulation. A victorious Burgoyne would have been contemptuous and insulting on such an occasion. Whipple handled the situation quite differently, although all knew how important the victory just obtained.
One more anecdote about Whipple at this time must be told. Like many officers Whipple had slaves; one in particular, named Prince, went to the war with his master. Before an engagement expected to be difficult, Whipple freed him upon Prince saying that he could only fight for freedom if he himself were free. Whipple felt the full force of this unanswerable argument, and made Prince a free man on the spot.
Whipple’s career both during and after the Revolution flourished, despite the fact that his health was uncertain, his heart weak. It because of this heart that he died. As Associate Justice of the Superior Court of New Hampshire he was required to ride circuit. One day while doing so, he fainted and fell from his horse to his death. Right up to the last moment of life, he worked for the good of the people, quietly, resolutely, obscurely, dying November 28, 1785.
Long overdue.
When it came for his tombstone to be made, his reserve served him poorly. Not even the fact that he had signed the great Declaration was mentioned. Now at last, for him and for 11 other signers, belated recognition has come. This year small bronze plaques will be added to their tombs. It’s little enough and that overdue, for those who gave so much to create and maintain our Great Republic, now imperiled by lesser folk who not only do not know Whipple’s work and legacy, but are doing everything they can to undo it.

I chose life… and so should you. 347,000,000 adults now diagnosed with diabetes. How one man’s story can help you at once!

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
The number of adults with diabetes worldwide has more than doubled in three decades, to an estimated 347 million a new study says. The study, led by Goodarz Danaei of the Harvard School of Public Health and Majid Ezzati of Imperial College, London, analyzed diabetes data from 1980 to 2008. Their analysis found that 153 million people had diabetes in 1980; this number had swelled to 347 million in 2008.
Much of that increase is due to aging populations — since diabetes typically hits in middle age — and population growth, but part of it has also been fueled by rising obesity rates.
With numbers climbing almost everywhere, experts said the disease is no longer limited to rich countries and is now a global problem. Countries in which the numbers rose fastest include Cape Verde, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea, and the United States.
More alarming news.
These figures do not reflect the generations of overweight children and young adults who have yet to reach middle age. This will create a massive burden on already severely challenged health systems.
The most alarming news of all… Each of these people could take charge of their disease, but too often don’t, thereby triggering even graver health problems.
“A disease of the mouth.”
I like to say, tongue firmly in cheek, that diabetes is a disease of the mouth: open mouth, insert enough of the wrong things, get disease and all its myriad of complications. I should know; I’m one of the world’s aging diabetics. Now 64, I was diagnosed about 50.
The day my blunt, most direct physician delivered the news he asked me one question: “Do you want to live longer or shorter?” I chose longer; he then laid on me exactly what I needed to do to achieve the objective of more time and that of the highest quality. While hardly an ideal patient, I was more than willing to make the necessary changes in diet and lifestyle. Not only willing but committed and determined to do so. Once over 205 chunky pounds, my 5? 10 1/2? frame is now a lean 157 pounds… with all other numbers appropriate; something to write home about, especially since I can wear the same trousers I wore in graduate school 40 years ago! Can you?
What I have learned along the way.
I want to say, right from the get-go, that I am NOT playing physician here; you need to consult yours at regular intervals as I do. Still, diabetes seems to me a disease tailor-made for personal management. There are things, lots of things, you can do to improve your situation. Here’s what works for me:
1) Take ownership of your disease and decide whether you want to gamble with your life by doing little or nothing.
The great thing about diabetes is that its improvement or deterioration is very much in your hands. If you take charge in a positive, pro-active manner you are going to improve. if you persist in fighting your diagnosis and what you can do, right at home, too, you won’t. In other words, you can be adult about it… or select adolescent petulance.
2) Don’t try to change everything overnight; do start making changes at once. Remember, diabetes and what you do to manage it is a marathon, not a sprint. This is a disease without (just yet) a cure; it’s a disease that’s with you sleeping and waking. You cannot, therefore, do something today and then ignore it. With diabetes you’re fighting a war, not a battle. Treat it accordingly.
3) Clean out your cupboards… clean out your refrigerator.
If you don’t have readily at hand the destructive things… the high sugar drinks, the cakes and bakery goods… all the things that work against your success and create long-term problems, so much the better.
If you don’t have readily at hand the bad things and have to make a special effort to go out and get them, you will, perforce, ingest less.
4) Don’t think in terms of diets and deprivations. Think in terms of the additional life and time you’re getting.
We live in a culture that screams “I want this and I want this NOW!” We are all influenced by the “I’m worth it and I’m going to have it” mentality. Thus you need practical ways to overcome these insidious influences.
To start with, never call what you’re doing a “diet”. Diets are about depriving yourself; think instead of buying your life back from the pawn shop. When you eat bad things you’re cutting time off your life; when you make the necessary changes, you buy yourself back.
5) Count to 10.
Before you drink that sugary concoction or take another bite of your favorite confection, count to 10. This gives your brain time to remind you that you probably can live without the indiscretion you are about to make. The sequence goes like this: want. stop. count to 10.
Now, if you do this and still eat the offending morsel, even two, don’t collapse with guilt and recrimination. Just resolve to do better next time… because you can be sure there WILL be a next time, and many such.
6) Eat all day.
Still eating big, set meals that leave you breathless and bloated? These constitute an assault on the body. Stop it now!
Instead eat frequently throughout the day, small portions that satisfy and which your previously overworked body can handle.
Start eating fresh fruit… nuts… small snacks of maximum protein and nutrition, minimum sugars, calories, carbohydrates. Make the portions small but make their ingestion frequent. Your body knows its work. Don’t overfeed… graze instead. All day long.
7) Make breakfast your most important meal.
You’ve got a lot to accomplish today. You’re going to need a lot of energy and stamina. Thus, you must make breakfast your most important meal. Don’t even dream of stinting here. Breakfast constitutes the launching pad for a successful day. Treat it accordingly. By comparison never, ever eat your biggest meal at the end of the day or evening. Your body can’t handle it and shouldn’t have to try.
Before bed, give yourself a snack, fruit (raisons are always a treat), popcorn. You get the idea. Go to bed satisfied, sleep satisfied, wake up in productive good humor.
You’ll start seeing — and feeling — results at once.
The great thing about managing your diabetes is that if you follow these sensible suggestions, you’ll start seeing results at once. For one thing (and very gratifying it is) your weight will start to drop… reverting to your body’s natural weight. And as you see and feel that occurring, you’ll be spurred to keep on truckin’, towards the Promised Land.
As you go, as you achieve results, reward yourself. You deserve it, not least because you are doing what every one of the 347 million afflicted should be doing… but aren’t. Now that you are on your way to success, print this article and share it with a friend. It’s one of the privileges of your improved situation and state of mind. Use it… and help someone you know and love. Someday they’ll throw their arms around you and tell you you saved their life. And it’ll be true…

‘With your shield, or on it.’ Why America won’t get and doesn’t really want civic comity and civility.

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Imagine, if you will, that you are a candidate for the United States Senate, the most exclusive club on earth.
You have wanted to be a member, you have dreamed of it for your entire life.
You have sacrificed over and over again to get this office of the people’s trust. You have neglected  your spouse… your children… because there are only 24 hours a day and something’s got to give. But your dream cannot be compromised… for that is the sine qua non of your entire existence.
You have spent long hours of every day raising the millions of dollars you must have to be competitive.
Now it is just 8 days before the election… and you, the golden boy or girl that you are, you are down by just 4 points in the latest poll.
Your financial backers are telling you they didn’t invest their hard-earned money to cheer an also-ran. They make it clear what they think of such people. You know they are right, for you know America’s Success Mantra.
Respected senior members of your party, some direct from Washington, D.C., have told you that the party’s agenda (by which, of course, they mean, America’s agenda) is on the line. They need your vote, and they need it now. They make it plain that high posts of honor and deference await if you win… but nothing except scorn and execration if you do not.
Good earnest supporters, the people of Main Street, are telling you, like Princess Leia to Obi-wan Kenobi, that “you’re our only hope.” You cannot let these folks down… they would despise you if you did. And they’d be right.
The financial backers demand victory!
The party big-wigs insist on victory!
The people on Main Street tell you their storm-tossed lives depend on victory  — on you!
And your handlers, the people you hired at great, almost unimaginable cost (they did, after all, manage to defeat three sitting senators, one thought impregnable in the last election), these handlers are saying… and their reasons are crystal clear… that your opponent’s strongest suit is the integrity with which the voters regard him. Even you, the white hope of the opposition, have a sneaking regard for his old-time morality and squeaky clean service.
But the handlers, your brains trust, is also telling you that after all your opponent is vulnerable. Yes, after all, you are only 4 points behind.  They are also telling you with insistence how to eradicate this trifling deficit, grab the seat, and move up to your rightful destiny in the Senate of these United State and in the History of America.
All you have to do is ratchet up the attacks, just another notch or two…. just ratchet up the attack. Insinuate… besmirch…. belittle…  distort… demean… degrade…
Then, in the final three days, blanket the airwaves with total, complete, shock and awe belligerence, nothing, absolutely nothing held back, everything on the line, do or die, take no prisoners.
Yes, it will cost millions… yes it will shred the reputation of an opponent whose virtues and service even you can see… but it is what all elements of your campaign want, indeed absolutely insist upon.
“Victory,” Vince Lombardi wrote, “isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.”
And so you win your Senate seat… and it is sweet. As sweet as you always knew it would be.
Whereupon the Leader of your party in the Senate comes to visit and remarks, almost as an afterthought, that there’s a certain important vote coming up, next Thursday he thinks it is… and that he is hoping for the favor of your support.
From such a man on such a subject at such a time, such words, almost gentle, are the sternest of commands. You have really not had a chance to read the bill… you know precious little about it, but you have heard whispers that your biggest financial backer is….. opposed to it.
From such a man on such a subject at such a time, such words, not so gentle, are, too, the sternest of commands.
And so, while understanding that no man can serve two masters, you attempt to do just that. Your maiden speech on the issue falls flat. The Leader is not happy. Your financial backer is not happy. Your constituents, too, let you know they are not happy.
And you are the least happy of all. However, you learn and next time you are ready.
You make a calculated decision based on public policy and private gain. You make a deal with the Devil and the Devil tells you to demonize your opponent before your opponent demonizes you.
So you do, with no qualms whatsoever because your opponents on this issue gained a march by demonizing — you.
You learn two sets of words: the words for defending your side. and the ones for stigmatizing opponents. On the one hand is patriotism, what is good for America, lowering taxes, transparency in government, protecting the Middle Class.
On the other are words like disloyal, perfidious, selfish, short- sighted, special interests.
All you have to do is throw these words, and dozens like them, into a hat and pull them out one at a  time, and, voila, instant speech.
A quick study, you see early on that the more moderate the speech, the more reasonable the views, the less attention you get… and attention in Washington is how you play the game, increase your visibility, and win the glittering prizes. You get this message Loud and Clear.
And so you up the ante, seeing your opponents no longer as good men and women like you (perhaps blighted by party affiliation) but as minions of an Evil Empire and the darkest of views and aspirations. Moderation doesn’t work and, moreover, it isn’t justified. Your opponents represent Everything Wrong With America. You learn it is your sacred duty to say so, to expose the culprits and Save The Nation and its beseeching members.
And so you do… and as you deliver the red meat, the media delivers you…. to the attention of other media, movers and shakers nationwide, and to the unlimited financial resources of this great nation, a nation yearning for Leadership; now knowing that leader can be — you.
You are ready to answer this clarion call. Thus at last you understand, deep in your soul, the unanswerable validity of ancient Greek historian Plutarch’s telling tale of the Spartan mothers. They said, they meant “Come home with your shield, or on it.” You have heard…. and you are ready. You know just what to do. 31 bullets, 6 tragic deaths in Tucson, Arizona, , innumerable jeremiads and the most profound lamentations right up to the White House won’t change things a whit. We’re all sure of that, right?
