Home truths from an old hand about what it takes to succeed online. You may not like them but you need them!

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Every day thousands of people worldwide wake up and, hey presto!, have a great idea: I’m going to set up a business for myself online. Tons of people have done that and oodles of money is being made.
Now hear this: you are now and truly entering the twilight zone… and I want to help you get through it with maximum success and minimum frustration.
Who am I? Well, I am an old Internet hand who, since 1994, has made his primary work place the Internet and has reaped over the years a very ample reward. Now it is time for me to share with you some of the lessons of these years of learning, growth, and profits.
I know what you’re thinking: “Yikes, another old geezer from ancient times trying to help me by offering useless advice that never in a million years could possibly apply to me and my situation.” Is that how you feel when those more experienced than you are (and more successful) offer up their nuggets of wisdom? If so, reconsider and feast your eyes on this:
Item: Most home-based Internet businesses fail unless they have certain crucial criteria in place. Without these factors, you will fail, too.
Item: Your online business is most vulnerable if you have never previously been involved in business and have limited Internet experience. The failure rate here is staggering.
Item: You are at severe risk if you are trying to run a one-person online business and have no one else to advise and counsel you. This is very likely the situation in which you find yourself right this minute. You will soon discover why one is the loneliest — and least successful — number.
Now, have I got your attention?
The minute you decided you wanted to make money online, you became a failure waiting to happen. That’s why you must pay close attention to the recommendations that follow. Not only are they the result of many successful years online, they are heartfelt, because online helpful friends are few and far between… and should be listened to with the utmost respect, even if you don’t like what they’re telling you.
Home truth number 1: Life online for most would-be Internet entrepreneurs is nasty, brutish and short. It looks like this: decide to have an online business, get a website, then…. absolutely nothing. No traffic! No customers! No money! You will know this description applies to you very, very soon if you are being at all honest with yourself.
How long have you been trying to make money online?
How much have you made?
How much have you spent to launch this e-enterprise?
How much time have you wasted?
What makes you think tomorrow will be better than yesterday?
These are tough questions… and most online business wannabees never do demand answers from themselves… or at least not before it’s too little too late.
Home truth number 2: You don’t know enough about developing your crucial prospect list.
People who make money online know that the list is the business and the business is the list. Do you know this and are you focusing your expertise, time and money in developing that all important list? Or are you focusing on such inessential factors as the colors used on your website, your domain name, how many business cards you should order, etc? All such questions collectively do not have the importance and significance of this single query: what did you do today, yesterday, the day before yesterday and the day before that to build the list, the list that is the business and from whence all your profits will derive, now and forever?
Home truth number 3: You have no marketing experience or success.
Who succeeds online? People who know what marketing is, have important marketing experience, and know what marketing they must know and do daily. Sadly, the wannabees have absolutely none of these things and their lack is both obvious and fatal. You cannot succeed in business online (or off for that matter) with only rudimentary marketing skills, hoping that that will be enough. It won’t be. A thorough practical knowledge of reality-based marketing is essential. You proceed at your peril without it.
Home truth number 4: Success online means having the ability to write cogent advertising and other copy.
How are your customer-centered writing skills? The truth, please, and nothing but the truth.
Successful Internet entrepreneurs are to a person good customer-centered writers. Or if they’re not they have solved that problem by hiring someone who is. Thus, your question is this: can I write the necessary copy that gets prospects to stop in their tracks, pay attention, peruse the offer and product details, and act? Merely “thinking” you can write such copy is just not good enough. Would you go sailing in a leaky boat? Then don’t deceive yourself here either. Excellent copywriting skills are a must.
Home truth number 5: You’re not selling nearly enough products.
Want success online? Sell lots of products. Want even more success? Sell lots more. Success online directly correlates to how many products you sell and your skill in presenting them.
How many products are you selling today?
How many yesterday? The day before?
If you are not adding new products daily, you are handicapping your ability to make money online.
Every successful online entrepreneur is engaged in a strenuous search and discover mission aimed at finding more products.
Are you? If not, your Internet obsequies are near at hand.
Home truth number 6: You are not skilled in essential traffic generation techniques.
In real estate, it’s location, location, location.
Online, it’s traffic, traffic, traffic.
The sad truth is you traffic generation skills and experience are minimal, certainly inadequate to generate the necessary traffic that ensures success.
Hopefully you’ll admit this is true. Then, assuming you are willing to knuckle down and master traffic essentials, the better to create and grow your list, you at least have a prayer.
However, if you do not have the necessary traffic generation skills… and remain unwilling to say so and do something about it, you’re DOA… 100% certain to fail.
Home truth number 7… but I must cease and desist as my space for today is now at an end. There is, of course, much more I can tell you… and undoubtedly will. For now, promise me this: that you will attend closely to these deeply honest observations. And when you implement them successfully, you’ll let me know. I’d like to know how you’re getting on, with my help.

Of ‘sliders’, ‘cravers,’ and a White Castle where you are monarch of all.

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
It is the midnight hour here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in Cambridge town. And like my overindulged neighbors, I am in search of something to satisfy a craving, for without satisfaction I shall not sleep. As this is a college town, the ultimate college town, with every kind of taste and flavor readily at hand, all ready to obliterate the hunger pangs of the privileged, voracious herds of students foraging hereabouts, there should be no trouble getting that precise, desired effect.
But the taste I seek cannot be found in Cambridge, or Boston, or even in the whole of New England or even beyond. It is a taste rooted in the Midwest and, thus, I need stratagems to find it… all the while my brain, sharpened by exact desire, screams for the thing, the exact thing, no substitutions, no deceptions, no facsimiles, don’t even try.
This is White Castle… don’t even begin to call it just a ‘hamburger.”
And if you have never had one, do not condescend to judge us who have. We know this thing… and if we are in thrall to a taste… we at least have had it, while you have not and do not know.
This, then, is for my fellow “cravers”… you know who you are… and you know what I am going through now… for you may well be going through it, too…
Born in the heartland.
Harry Truman, sometime president of these United States, once said, “There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.” I am going to dish up some of that history now.
The White Castle story begins in Wichita, Kansas. It is 1921… America is confident, striding for the first time on the world stage; a heady adolescent among nations… strong, swaggering, a bull in Europe’s epicene china shop. Such a nation, still raw, required food to match. It needed wheat…. and beef… and onions… it was democratic fare… cheap, pungent, delicious, pay your nickle and, laughing with your buddies, wipe your mouth on your sleeve; (your mother cannot see the infraction, so shocking at home.)
The White Castle story is a story of lean, young men, with big ideas; applying science and brains to the hunger of a nation moving to a jazz beat. In such a nation everything was possible… and a young man in Wichita was free to dream and to build and to triumph. In Wichita that year, in America, there was nothing but exuberance, pulsating energies and panoramas of promise.
White Castle aimed to be the fuel for such a people and their ascendancy. And so it began…
Item: White Castle was the first fast-food hamburger chain in the nation.
Item: The first to sell a million hamburgers.
Item: The first to sell a billion hamburgers.
Item: The first to sell frozen fast food.
Founders Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson had an idol… a man of drive, energy, imagination and, always, the ability and desire to improve, make the product better, and grow.
This was Henry Ford, and the founders of White Castle never stopped scrutinizing the Master for ways they could benefit and, in turn, benefit the nation.
“The Jungle”.
The first problem the founders had to solve was one of perception. In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote one of the signal books of the burgeoning republic, “The Jungle”. It was a book inducing anger and nausea, exposing in sickening detail the revolting conditions of the meat packing industry. America blanched and heaved… cleaning up the noisome menace…
The Wichita boys did their bit. They named their baby “White” for something clean, pure and untainted… and “Castle” for something strong and resolute.
Then they started their life-long mission of mechanizing their work, just as Henry Ford was doing at River Rouge.
Their restaurants, made to resemble the famed Chicago Water Tower, were eye-catching, distinctive, octagonal buttresses, crenelated towers, and a parapet wall. Here, well before Huey Long, “every man was king.” The look was pristine, sparkling white porcelain enamel on steel exteriors, stainless steel interiors, employees outfitted with spotless uniforms… never sprinkled with the blood of what you were eating.
Now they could turn their full attention to the most important thing of all… the taste.
First, Founder Anderson invented the hamburger bun, as well as the kitchen assembly line that gave rise to the modern fast-food industry. Due to White Castle’s innovation of chain-wide standardized methods, customers could be sure they would receive the same product in every one of their restaurants; here, too, they lead the way, as they embarked on sure and certain growth.
Since nothing of the mechanized fast-foot industry existed, it all had to be imagined, attempted, instituted, tried, and re-tried, the tested way of progress for people unafraid to risk, to attempt, to improve, and improve some more. It was the American way, and it was a certain formula for greatness.
White Castle, and the hamburger at its center, was a significant part of this glorious cycle of never-ending improvement.
Anderson developed an efficient method for cooking hamburgers, using freshly ground beef and fresh onions. The ground beef was formed into balls by machine, eighteen to a pound, or forty per kilogram. The balls were placed on a hot grill and topped with a handful of fresh, thinly shredded onion. Then they were flipped so that the onion was under the ball.
The ball was then squashed down, turning the ball into a very thin patty. The bottom of the bun was then placed atop the cooking patty with the other half of the bun on top of that so that the juices and steam from the beef and onion would permeate the bun. After grilling, a slice of dill pickle was inserted before serving on its distinctive square bun available at White Castle only. This was the famous “slider”.
Now, putting it all together, you didn’t just have a burger and fries… you had an event, a feast for nose, eye, tongue and brain. You stopped at other burger joints because you were hungry and couldn’t wait any longer for relief at someplace better. You went to White Castle for satisfaction, gratification, bliss.
On this basis White Castle grew, keeping its price, a dime apiece, fair, affordable. Then, in 1933, Ingram bought out Anderson, moving to Columbus, Ohio. The new owner refused to franchise or take on debt to expand, and so White Castle fell behind other purveyors of burgers, relatively small at 420 White Castle outlets; the one I visited assiduously when I studied at Harvard, in Central Square, bit the dust, to my acute despair.
Somewhere along the line the unyielding insistence on growth, improvement, and no limits whatsoever, died. When I called White Castle’s corporate offices yesterday to see how I could buy the product by mail, the voice at the other end of the line was of the “couldn’t be bothered” variety, dismissive, unhelpful, eager to get me off the line and go back to her nails and jeremiads. Thus the dedicated, devoted “cravers” of company lore are cast aside and dismissed. And so as White Castle goes, the once great nation goes… and we are saddened and bereft.

How to write the kind of blog copy that turns readers into fans who cannot live without you!

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
This is an article for people who want to be smart bloggers! Bloggers who change lives! Bloggers who get people to sit up, take notice and say, “Wow! That guy is right! That guy is on the money!” Bloggers who don’t just want readers…
… but fans who sit next to their computers waiting for your next blog post.
In this article I am going to show you the secret to becoming a producer of “must read” copy…. and becoming, in the process, a person who goes way beyond having readers… instead creating fans.
400,000+ words in the last year.
This article celebrates achieving a “personal best” goal for me… a goal I challenged myself to make one year ago…. and which I have, with the publication of this article, now achieved. I wanted to see if I could write at least 400,000 words of copy in 365 days; not just drab, undistinguished, pedestrian copy either, but copy that’s timely! Intellectually distinguished! Lyric! Insightful! Yes, the kind of copy that stops people worldwide in their tracks and forces them to sit up! Take notice! And pay attention… because they just couldn’t bear to miss a single word!
And I am pleased to tell you that this is precisely what has happened! My blog, where you can find all my articles, now generates millions of hits and a stream of gratifying comments from people worldwide who feed my ego and make my day.
This is me!
And it can be you!
1) Tell stories.
The greatest communicators on earth — Jesus! Abraham Lincoln! Mark Twain! were story tellers. They used the power of stories to make things easy for their audience to understand… and to drive home their points, no matter how difficult and complicated.
You must become a story teller, too, not just a finder and disseminator of facts. Facts alone don’t move people. Mere facts don’t capture minds. Facts, no matter how important, don’t touch hearts. But stories do… they always do… and that is why your blog posts must rely on stories that capture people and leave them begging for more…
2) Today’s successful article starts with yesterday’s motivating “heads up”.
If you want readers today, titillate them yesterday. You see, the power of yesterday is to entice readers today.
People will only be moved to the extent that you move them. If you want readers tomorrow… the crucial process of exciting them starts today.
“Tomorrow! A story of love! Power! Treachery and despair! A story that will move you! Outrage you! And, if there’s a tear in you, cause it to fall! All coming tomorrow to a computer near you!”
This’ll get ‘em!
3) Write short sentences where every word counts.
Thanks to the marvelous technical tools writers have nowadays, most don’t write; they “typewrite”, in the withering phrase of Truman Capote. He was masterful, and he knew that writers could kill their points, their stories and their readers by pouring out too many words and sentences straining to digest them.
Don’t make this mistake.
Look at the sentence length in this article… short, punchy, easy to take in at a glance…
Your sentences should move accordingly.
Moreover, prune your articles mercilessly. A sentence that exceeds just a few words is a sentence smothering itself. And dead sentences will never move live people.
4) Short paragraphs give a story the air and space they need.
Today’s readers are restless readers. They are overwhelmed with information… but have the same number of hours in a day as Caesar. In short, they are looking for a reason to put your copy down… never to be picked up again.
Short paragraphs and airy lay-out forestall this tragedy.
Look at this article… short, often real short, paragraphs with pages that look inviting, easy, not prolix and hard.
Contemporary readers demand ease… and if you don’t give it to them, they walk… fast.
5) Make your people real, not caricatures.
The reason volumes of commentary don’t work is because its authors create card board characters. They then laud the characters they like and demolish the ones they don’t. Not only is this unfair… but it makes for lousy copy.
What distinguishes the best commentary is the way you handle people whose opinions you may not only dislike, but actually abhor. Do you give them the courtesy of presenting their point of view fairly, objectively, honestly… or do you want just a cheap shot that not only misrepresents the people you’re writing about… but proves you’re a writer not worth reading?
This point is worth elucidating because it’s one too many commentators miss.
One reason writers like writing commentary is because it turns them from word peddlers into gods, omniscient, all-powerful, always right, never wrong, with the ability to access every human heart and brain at will.
Such people of course become insufferable in short order.
Your job as a commentator is to be sure you have done everything possible to ensure that all the people you write about are presented without prejudice, honestly, completely, with sincerity and with care.
This does not mean you necessarily agree with their positions or actions. It means you intend to give your readers the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth… even if you strenuously disagree.
Only when you have done this can you in good conscience and to best effect proceed to your opinion. Because only if you have allowed even your most pernicious characters their say… can your say be meaningful, insightful, and worth reading.
Use these recommendations.
The best commentators can have enormous influence… which is why you must use your commentating position wisely, not least by producing copy that moves your readers, with every word you write.
These suggestions will help.
By using them you will produce copy — starting today — that changes your readers’ outlook, opinion, point of view, one apt word at a time. When you do this not only will you have a legion of readers, followers and fans…. but you’ll deserve them!

‘Don’t break the heart that loves you….’ Lance Armstrong fights doping charges by ’60 Minutes’… but this time they have teeth.

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Author’s program note. There was that quavery, achy-breaky tone in her voice? that made you believe Connie Francis’ world was crumbling… that respect, trust, love were gone and her heart was broken, all because one lover was true and the other… wasn’t.
The name of one of these songs was “Don’t Break the Heart that Loves You”. (1962). You’ll find it in any search engine. Listen to it once or twice… before you read here of the real-life tempests and troubles of a man who’s breaking our hearts right now… and it hurts.
Lance Armstrong, the very essence of grit and determination.
Lance Armstrong is as American a story as you’ll ever find.
He was born September 18, 1971 at Methodist Hospital in Oak Cliff, Texas, the southern sector of Dallas. His mother Linda Mooneyham was a secretary; his father Eddie Gunderson worked for “The Dallas Morning News”, as a route manager. He was named after Lance Rentzel, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver. His home life was chaotic; his mother married and divorced three times… and so poisoned are the confused relationships that Armstrong doesn’t speak to his father and has been caustic about Terry Keith Armstrong, the man his mother married and who adopted him.
In short, like millions of his countrymen, there was mayhem at home, not love. And Lance Armstrong wanted love… Sports were the way to get it… escape, recognition, acceptance… and above all love.
Armstrong got active in sports for the first time when, aged 12, he finished fourth in Texas state 1,500-meter freestyle. But when he saw a poster for a junior triathlon he ditched swimming. It was a good move. In 1987-1988, Armstrong was the number one ranked triathlete in the 19-and-under group. It was now that people began, with seriousness, to look at Lance… and the magnificent body God gave him. It was the vehicle to move out… to move on… to move up…
Armstrong’s point total for 1987 as an amateur was better than the five professionals ranked that year. At 16, A:rmstrong became a professional triathlete and became national sprint-course triathlon champion in 1989 and 1990 at 18 and 19, respectively.
A boy and his bike.
Every American boy wants a bike…a bike he can use to get away from mamma… and taste freedom… a bike he can pound, dance wheelies, maneuver with show-off arrogance… and no hands. Yeah, every boy needs a bike. Lance Armstrong did, too. In short order he and his bike had fused; Lance needed his bike… and his bike needed him. They were an unbeatable team, soaring, energized… true grit, the centaur of the course, a phenomenon that made, even in these early days, the crowd scream his name as he whirled by, the ultimate manifestation of what every boy with a bike could feel and imagine…
It became supremely clear that Lance’s greatest talent was for bicycle racing after he won the U.S. amateur championship in 1991. Representing the United States, he finished 14th in the 1992 Summer Olympics. And now the money came; it was the folks at Motorola who got there first. They wanted what the whirligig of Armstrong could deliver… speed, grace, excitement, and the thrill of escape from everyday woes and oppressions.
In 1993, Armstrong won 10 one-day events and races. He stunned the cycling world when at age 21, he became one of the youngest riders to ever win the UCI Road World Championship, held in pouring rain in Norway…. and so it went, dazzling speed, even more dazzling endurance his to command and ours to exult. We loved this boy… and the smile he flashed us as he sped by… he was our Lance.
The big “C”.
And so it might have gone… more prizes, more victories, more fame, and the money that pours in such situations. But fate, wide-grinning fate, was not finished with Lance Armstrong, not by a long shot. On October 2, 1996, aged just 25, Armstrong was diagnosed as having developed stage three testicular cancer. The cancer spread to his lungs, abdomen and brain. On that first visit to a urologist in Austin, Texas for his cancer symptoms, he was coughing up blood and had a large, painful testicular tumor. Immediate surgery and chemotherapy were required to save a life which had now taken a very painful turn.
But here is where the story of Lance Armstrong morphs into something greater, more compelling, and infinitely more important. For now, to the admiration of all, he becomes the very embodiment of American grit and determination, a man of gallantry and fortitude, a hero for our times. And so Lance Armstrong showed the nation and the world what real courage was all about.
He got back on his bike and turned it into a symbol of hope. And we loved him, if possible, even more… for he carried on his handlebars the best of us…
Tour de France
Before his cancer treatment began, Armstrong had already won two Tour de France stages. Now, a cancer survivor, he wanted to show the world not so much what he could to… but what they could do for themselves if they would never quit, never waver, never doubt, never throw in the towel or pity themselves. Lance was never about pity. He was about being the best you could be whatever your affliction. And the grueling stages of the Tours of France,(which he won 18 times) became a manifesto to the world about rising above and winning the great game of life, whatever stood in your way.
Oh, had it all just ended there… on such a note of bliss and transcendence; even his bitterest foe might wish as much.
But it did not, has not ended there… wide-grinning fate has seen to that.
Throughout Armstrong’s career, there have been charges he achieved his great feats solely or in large measure because of performance-enhancing drugs. These are charges he has adamantly, unequivocally denied, pointing to his willingness to take hundreds of drug tests. But the charges have persisted over time, gaining credibility and adherents. Now the most substantial of these charges has been made on CBS’ respected “Sixty Minutes” program (May 20, 2011) by former U.S. cycling professional Tyler Hamilton.
The cornerstone of Armstrong’s defense against previous charges was that he had never tested positive during his career. But this was flatly contradicted by his former U.S. Postal team-mate Hamilton on “Sixty Minutes”. “I know he’s had a positive test before,” Hamilton said. “For EPO (at the) Tour of Switzerland, 2001.” Asked by the CBS reporter Scott Pelley how this alleged positive test had not been made public and no action taken, Hamilton said “People took care of it.”
Armstrong through his attorney instantly answered this and the other charges, and immediately threatened to sue. But CBS is holding its ground, since they have credibility to protect too. Both sides know the seriousness of this matter… a fight perhaps to the death.
As for Lance’s fans; they are fewer now, quieter, reflective. They are hurting bad, afflicted, unhappy. They want their boy back, riding like the wind past them, arrayed with dazzling smile, victory in his pocket. We loved that boy and everything about him… he was ours. Now he’s slipping away…
Connie Francis knew everything about that, about the misery, the longing, the brutal unhappiness and regret when love goes bad. “Don’t break this heart of mine…Don’t break this heart that loves you so…”

Internet Businesses are real and here is heartfelt blog about it!

By Michael Beirens
The start To best understand the team MLM or network marketing we have to go back to between the Thirteenth to the seventeenth century both in England and in Europe.  The people who lived in the villages at that time all did some form of work, and this was known as the Cottage industry.  People who raised sheep would sell the wool to someone who would spin it into tread that could be used to make cloth.  They made the cloth and then usually on Friday’s and Saturday’s all the villagers in a given area would hold a market and there they would buy or sell or barter merchandise.
As we have stated this was called the cottage industry. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth, centuries along came the Industrial revolution and people with money would build factories and offer jobs to the village people who would then work in one large building. We have all heard about the workshops of Charles Dickens era. Child labor and very poor working conditions.
We have now moved forward to the early and middle twentieth century. Your father or grand father worked for say Ford or Kodak or some other large conglomerate. We have now come full circle with the large corporations. They have now either closed or moved off shore.
Full Circle
We, that is the working families of the world, are in a dilemma.  The vast majority of the working families in the world, can either work for a minimum wage, and usually have the husband and wife working or find an alternative, on how to bring money into the household.  It is this quest for the alternative that I have tried to bring together the information that can help all of the people whether employed, underemployed or unemployed.  It is a very simple and easily answer question…
We must now must go back to the cottage industries or as we know it today MLM or working in the home.  The most infamous MLM Company is off course “Amway.”  People who shun this company may not realize, but they paved the way for many other MLM companies/businesses to find the light of day in our society. It should be stated here that Amway has produced more Millionaires than any other company on the face of the earth.  We have now moved even further with the home industry and the computer has made the home worker the wave of the future.
The Wave of the Future
The stigma of MLM is not only misunderstood but it must be grasped by the general populous if we are to lift our heads above the water again. If you talk to a Tax consultant he would advise that every person should have a home based business. When you have time take a look at this site, it’s all about the tax advantages of having a home  business. http://www.homebusinesstaxsavings.com  The Power of network marketing must be explored and then understood if we are to alleviate the unemployment and poverty not only here in America but also in great many other countries of the world.   The economic climate that is prevalent in the world right now can only be lifted if people go back to the cottage industries.  It is too late for a wait and see what the government can do, it must be understood that they don’t care!  Whether you are a democrat or republican or a whatever, the politicians cannot alleviate the economic conditions that are prevalent throughout America and the world. It should be understood here that it is the corporations that really rule the roost.
The Corporate Structure
Let’s take a perfect example and you who are reading this blog should answer the question that I will pose to yourselves.  The question?  Who is one of the largest corporations in the world and the largest employer in the world?  The answer of course is Wal-Mart!  Let’s first state that the purpose of any corporation is to make a profit, it cannot exist in the world without that.
Let’s now look at the structure of Wal-Mart.  The vast majority of workers are paid the minimum wage in whatever state the store is situated.  You get a fixed income to do a job, you are told to do this job because it makes money for the company.  They, the company, also will pay you as little as possible to make sure they generate the most profits possible. Did you know that there are actually companies hired by huge corporations whose sole purpose is to decide how little they can pay people and still retain them as employees!  Remember that the minimum wage is set by law. Yes!! Our representatives who we vote in to either our state legislator or to Washington DC. They help set this wage limit. Maybe you didn’t know that, but it’s a given truth!
So at this point, in time let’s take a look at the Walton’s family. I would state here that I do not begrudge Sam Walton from making a profit, because Wal-Mart as with all companies are there to make a profit, they cannot exist without it.  But we the worker bees are paid a minimum, and yet the Walton families are the riches family in the world.  I believe that it stands at over $120 billion. I am not writing this blog to advocate any particular policy, I am just pointing out why we the people must go back to the cottage industry if we are to keep our heads above water.
You and I, The worker Bee
Maybe here I should mention one great misunderstood point, and that is that general populous does not understand the power that lies within their hands.  People are of the understanding that the companies, Wal-Mart, Safeway, Coca Cola and heaven knows how many others set the price of the commode’s that you and I buy in the market place.  WRONG!!!!  The prices that are set in the market place are set by the consumer. If a dozen eggs cost say $4 a dozen and no one buys, then the store will bring down the price, it has no choice. If it doesn’t sell a certain commodity they can either throw it away or bring down the price.
So, let’s get one thing straight, we the consumers control the price of 90% of products that are sold today.  But we have been brainwashed for want of a better team to accept what price is put before us.  We are told by the store we have no choice.  If we were to say fine, we are not going to pay that price it would come down.  Remember the expression “United we stand, Divided we fall.”   When people are divided they can be controlled and sold a bill of goods, on that I will say no more.
Do not like being sold
Let us now get back to network marketing, how many people reading my blog have been approached or e-mailed about some internet business. We, that is all of humanity hate to be sold anything. Let’s look at an example if we see two people approaching our door, we know straight away that someone is going to try to sell us something, whether they are Mormons, or JW’s or insurance or whatever, so we run and hide if we have time.
The Internet Age
There are millions of homes which now have computers, so we might think that things are worse, because we can be inundated by e-mails. The one great thing about e-mails is we don’t have to refuse anyone in person we just erase the email and move on.  But the other side to the coin, is we also might miss a great business opportunity. When you surf the internet there are so many great opportunities shown that you can get overwhelmed.  You have to be on your toes, as there are a great many scams out there.
Is the Internet a Scam?
When the word scam is brought up, you might automatically think they the business is not legitimate, but that is not entirely true, it could mean that the people who call themselves Guru are scamming you out of money. They usually ask for $47, then when you click away it drops to $27, then if you click away again it goes down to $17 either they sell you the e-book or whatever and they only show you the minimum so if you want more knowledge it cost you yet again.
Don’t pay for something you don’t understand!
The first thing you should ask is does this cost me money, if so how much.  Have you ever noticed how popular the following prices are $17, $27, $47 or even $97  where this guys get the prices from are mentioned in the former paragraph. People will pay because they are reading a well written advertisement, usually written by a company that majors in phycology. They know what the magic words are. Don’t Be Foolish, and don’t give those people your money!
Why is This article in My blog
The main reason I’m writing this small e-book is to advise you that you do not have to pay a great deal of money for any good internet program.  There are many very good internet programs out there and they are free to you to sign up.  My advice is don’t spend money, when you don’t know anything about Network marketing, what you are being sold is as they say a bill of goods. It looks good and they usually have people with strong testimonials, but the majority of the people giving these testimonials have been working the internet for a couple of years.  The ads sometimes go like this.

The Realization of Your Dreams!
It should mentioned here, that never in the history of the work place have so many business been available than can make the ordinary Joe, like you and me into multi-millionaires. The digital age is upon us and it is changing the economy right in front of our eyes. These internet programs would have been impossible even five years ago, but with all the changes in ecommerce and the hundreds of millions of people online the impossible has become possible. The world is really our Oster. If you tried with being a worker bee for someone else then an internet business holds your future. You must understand that 97% of the internet programs work but you have to understand all about the different parts that make up the whole.  There are four or five major obstacles that will confront you. But I’m only going to mention a couple.
Understanding MLM!
Let’s take a look at the Amway Founders Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel, they will tell you the story of Amway and if you are really interested in that story I believe there is a number of good books out there.  But basically they will tell you they approached about 1,000 people 900 wouldn’t give then time of day 100 signed up 90 dropped out and the other 10; 5 did nothing and 5 made Amway a billion dollar company.  The second story is just as interesting. You and I know it as KFC.  But did you know that Hartland Sanders started KFC when he was 66 years old,  He took his chicken recipe door to door or actually restaurant to restaurant.  He came out of the 1065 restaurant door, very discouraged, I’m not sure what his mind was saying but I would imagine it was lets go home, no one wants my chicken recipe. But he stopped one more time and the rest as they say is history.  One other person who I find very interesting is Bill Britt, one of Amway’s most successful distributors. His story is the same as the Amway founders, he showed the plan to about 1200 people, 900 said thanks but no thanks, a couple of hundred signed up, and about a dozen made Bill a multi-millionaire.

Reasons to Quit before you start
The first and most disheartens enemy then is Rejection, you must be ready to accept this, remember they are not rejecting you they are rejecting an idea that they have no understanding off.  Unfortunately the Amway stigma still hangs about that word, ‘MLM.’  Please understand that people do not know what they are rejecting.  Remember too that there first question if they are listening at all is “How much do you make,”   Then when you say “well I’m just starting out, just like Henry Ford; I’m trying to make my first car.  There answer is “Come back when you made a million bucks.”  You can at this point be sarcastic and say when I’ve made my first million I won’t be living around here then.so you better get in now.”
The second enemy that you have to face is deception, People will say that they will come to your house or where ever the presentation is and off course they won’t turn up. The great difference today is, you don’t have to hold meetings, you just leave them with a video and tell them you’ll watch it with them or you’ll come back tomorrow and pick it up.
To Start a Journey
How many people reading this little blog like to grow stuff  in their garden. Well let’s look at the analogy.
You find a plot of land, you dig the plot, weed out the grass and weeds, hoe the ground and plant you seeds. You pull the weeds and water your garden, and at the end of the growing season, you harvest your crop. If you would take that much care of a garden, why will you not take such care of your mind and life?
The stage is set for you to take hold of your life, there is a saying
“Don’t just take a breath to live, BUT!!! Take a breath to live, grow and learn.”
Another saying that I wrote a few years back.
“It doesn’t take courage to be a dreamer! BUT!!! It does take courage to turn dreams into reality.”
Let’s assume that you have listened to someone about an internet business, at this point let’s not both with a name. The journey that you are about to embark on can be a great adventure, if you want to look at it that way.  There is a saying “To change your life, all you have to do is change your mind,” You will, whether you realize it or not, you are going to have to move out of your comfort zone.  You may ask why I have so many little saying, the reason is that they are positive affirmations and when I feel a negative wave, I try to remember a little saying. You ask does it work, sometimes but, regardless I’m glad I can say them to myself.
Why Have I covered so much area
If you are reading this blog and you may be asking a great many questions. I mean I have taken you from the dark ages up to this internet age.  My purpose in taking you along this road is having you build within yourself, the realization that all of us go through hardships. The hardships of choice, we can either stay a worker bee or we can take life by the horns and give yourselves and your spouse and your children a better life.  I have said it before in this blog and I’ll repeat, never in the history of the world have there been so many opportunities to better ourselves than now.
Conditioned from School age
It’s unfortunate, but whether you realize it or not, we have been conditioned since our school days to fail, some people might say that’s not so, well Government surveys prove this statement, it is a fact that at retirement 67% of the people cannot provide for their own needs, and only 1 or 2 % are independently wealthy.
A Dream in Your heart
Everyone has a vision of themselves in their head, and for most people that vision is identical to their current reality.  They don’t see themselves as anything bigger than what they already are and therefore opportunity doesn’t register as anything of intrinsic value.  They may work in a convenience store and in their head they are a convenience store worker.  Most of what is sold to good people these days is a bunch of bad advice and general information.
If you read this far it means that you are searching for something.   You want to be more that a worker bee.  So a little exercise, sit and close your eyes.  Visualize what it is you want with all your heart, mind and soul. Build the dream in your mind. If you don’t dream, how do you think your dreams will come true?  But! It should be emphasized that your success is directly related to how hard you work, as it is in any business.
Helping others along the road to success
But with an Internet Business one other element should be added and that is your success is hinged a great deal on how much you help others. As you build your business do not look on others as dollar bills. Remember they are people who also have dreams.  Numbers never lie, pick your goal and then go into overdrive and massive action. If you talk to enough people you will succeed.  Bill Britt made a tape years ago, remember he’s a millionaire from Amway.  The tape is called “Would you search a year for someone like me.”
Why both writing this article
The main reason for writing this blog is to help you make logical and wise decisions, I have been burned so many times when I started out, that I am determent to stop as many people as I can from being burned and lead astray. There is no need to scam people but the so called gurus want to give enough that you will buy but keep enough from you that you are never a threat to their market place.
What not to look for in an Internet Business
We are now ready to look at a number of Internet businesses; the first item on the agenda is minimum cost, like $1 up to say $25 no more than that.  We don’t want to be hit by the so called guru’s; you know we have mentioned the $47 gang. You would not believe how many people rush through things, sign up to every new program in pre-launch and expect thousands by the morning.  I am going to put this bluntly…  The fact is you are being programmed to buy, Buy, and BUY, over and over again, without asking any serious questions about WHAT it is you actually need to succeed. You are being kept in the dark in regards to the ONLY things you actually have to learn to achieve success online.
Don’t Ever Give up
What I mean by that is you are being programmed to seek and purchase only the “HOPE” of achieving your goals, not the actual knowledge and education needed to help you DO IT!
This is not your fault, but is the natural direction the mind moves into when it reaches a point of saturation and information overload.
This is not some vast conspiracy mind you; it is just how marketing works. The problem is you need to learn HOW it works or it will work you over pretty bad, and you will continue to suspend your logic and reason without even realizing it is happening.
You need to be working for YOU, not some Internet or MLM “guru” who is grooming you to be their retirement fund.
Can I get Rich Quick
There are NO free rides to a successful business.
The truth is this…You CAN get rich quick! Don’t let anyone tell you it is not possible, because it is. You just have to KNOW what to do and what to expect, and that is where my marketing team comes in.
You have to start out with a realistic expectation of what “Quick” means first, or you will get burned time and time again online.
If you can completely replace your current income and then some in 12 months, that is quick! If you do not think that is quick then I know of a few slick marketers that have a product or two to sell you at around $97 a pop…or just go to Clickbank and take your pick!
Let’s Get Real Here…
You are reading this blog because you have already come to the realization that you don’t need to work for someone else your entire life to be financially stable and successful. We all know how that kind of plan works (or doesn’t work).
Remember not to speed read through this blog or skim over it. If you read slowly and let it soak in you won’t be confused afterwards or have to read it over and over again. This is YOUR future we are talking about here so do yourself a favor and Pay Attention!
What type of Business  is a Good Business
The type of business that you should look for and I’m going to mention a few, but the choice of which or any that you join is off course your final decision. I cannot and will not make that decision for you. Please understand that. The reason that I do not make those kinds of decisions is because I don’t know how you think and what you present circumstances are.
I give you an internet business address and you must read and think about what you need and what you see. But as I have stated any internet business that you visit from my referrals will not cost a great deal of money. Also they are very easy to understand and if you sign up for a business there are no hidden cost that you will be asked to pay for, so that you can obtain more information.
Always remember the choices that you make will determine the course of your future. No more no less!  To finish this blog, I want you remember this; success always comes down to one thing. “Am I willing to pay the price for my personal financial freedom”?
A life full of Stress
Before I mention a number of Internet Businesses, let’s look at what Forbes Magazine has stated that over the next 3 to 5 years 79 million people will be exactly where you are now looking for a home based business.  There is nothing worse than having to decide which bills to pay and
which ones you can get away with not paying until next month. Just like you, millions of people will have become tired of just getting by and of being forced to live in “fight/flight-survival mode” each and every day.  Let that go for a minute and imagine this…
Finally Life without Stress
Imagine having the time to do exactly what you want to do when you want to do it…Imagine you don’t have to selectively choose to pay your mortgage over your power bill this month…Imagine not having to make a quick payment to your credit card just to keep it from going over the limit!  Then answer me this question…How would your life change if 12 months from now, you could have replaced your entire income online through your own business, AND positioned yourself to be able to make as much money as you  want to, whenever you want to, from that point on?
Types of Internet Businesses
I now going to mention a number of businesses and give there internet address.  If you sign up for one of them or all of them you will find that I am your direct sponsor or up line. How they are listed is in no way telling you which the best is or the worst. As I have stated and will repeat I am not advising on which to join if any, because I believe that is your choice. I will certainly give you guidance and advice but that’s all.   So here is a list and brief description of each internet business.
This internet business is run by a great guy Howard Martell, if you wish to know more about this guy please read about him on his sites. His information is very clear and very, very important for you and others that you may sponsor as you grow in the knowledge. In the good old summertime. How to keep your profits sky-high in June, August, and July.

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Author’s program note. To get you in just the proper state of bliss for this article, search any search engine for that peppy Gay ‘Nineties style toe tapper, “In the good old summertime.” Released in1949 George Evans — music; Ren Shields — lyrics. I like Nat King Cole’s snazzy rendition.
Admit it, with Summer of 2011 at hand, you’re happy… especially if you’ve been suffering through a particularly bad and prolonged winter and punk spring as we in New England have. Yeah, catching a few rays at the beach looks real good about now… as does some Jimmy Buffett margaritas while doing absolutely nothing except swing in the hammock. Sign me up!
There is, of course, one fly in the ointment; there always is. And that fly is the little matter of your business… and the usual expenses that never seem to take a vacation. The question before this (beach) house is this: what can you do to make cool profits when the temperature’s hot. Dude, you’ve come to the right place for some sure-fire ways to sell your cake and eat it, too.
1) Recognize you’ve got a problem.
Most businesses (except seasonal ones) experience sales slow-downs and slumps after Memorial Day up to about a week or so after Labor Day; that is for non-USA readers from the last week-end of May until the first couple weeks of September. Your customers are planning on doing some of the same Buffett-style cavorting that you’ve got in mind… and if that diminishes your profits and gives you some cash problems, so what! They want to parteeee, just like you!
2) Check your sales stats for the previous summer.
Get the hard numbers. How bad was last year’s summer doldrums? That’ll give you a helpful benchmark for what you need this summer… and the dimensions of the seasonable slow-down you need to make up, for the sake of your peace of mind, to say nothing else.
3) Get your stats together ASAP.
You’re already behind the eight ball for these data; Memorial Day, after all, has come and gone and that is the unofficial start of summer. If you haven’t got your profit rescue plan together by now, you’ve got some midnight oil to burn to catch up. Remember, if you’re like most businesses (even the best established and successful), the advent of Memorial Day signifies the advent of those (gently we trust) slack profits that make us all nervous, especially in these economically soft times, the result of our last great recession.
4) Check the great (buy now) sales offers you made for last summer and the summer before.
You’ve got detailed information on the sales they made for you, don’t you? Well? The first rule of business life is never, ever re-invent the wheel. Check out your offers; what worked for bringing in the bucks? It may well make sense to re-use what you’ve already successfully done. Unless circumstances have dramatically changed, revise ads that have worked for you, bringing them up to date.
5) Offers, offers, better offers.
The key to your summer sales and keeping profits high is making good, limited time offers. This doesn’t mean just good offers; it means the best offers you can make. That’s where the money is.
You may think the customer is getting a deal that’s “too good”. Get rid of that pesky thought at once. I’m not going to hand you some sanctimonious line about the crucial importance of keeping customers happy and getting them to buy over and over again. You already know that.
No, the reason for making extraordinary, never-seen-before offers, is — you. You need the money and the peace of mind that accompanies it. So spectacular offers throughout the summer are mandatory. From right now!
6) Make more offers.
Yah, I told you this already. Why then am I repeating myself? Because the offer is absolutely crucial, and you must treat it as such.
Towards this end, make sure you keep all the special offers you make this summer; make sure each is accompanied by the exact sales stats. That’s your clue about whether you should offer them again towards the end of summer; or for your consideration next year.
7) Offer “best customer” deals… and be aggressive about promoting them.
Chances are if your business is in pretty good shape, you’ve become (sad to say) a tad lazy about marketing. You may even have “take-it-for-granted — itis”, and that costs you, especially during the summer when, whatever the temperature in your neck of the woods, you’ve got to hustle! “Best customer” deals are tailor-made for this situation.
Take the time, now (remember unofficial summer has already begun), to brainstorm extra good offers for your best customers. The more the merrier. Remember, you need cash and you need it yesterday. Your best customers already support you liberally; they can support you even more liberally. That is, if you make the really motivating offers that get them to take notice — and spend!
Call your best customers… and make time every day to talk live to and give these people your dazzling customer service (and, of course)… offers.
These days lots of businesses, use the phone for nothing more than taking incoming calls and calling the cleaner to see if they’ve got fresh clothes for tomorrow. In other words, old style personal treatment via the phone is about as dead as thank-you notes. But not chez vouz. It’s time to prove that you never forget how to ride a bike, er, make sales on the phone. Note: in case I forgot to mention… every phone conversation should, at the very least, be followed by some dazzling offers made via email. But you already know that.
9) Get a jump on your (probably) busier fall sales season. With the best will in the world and lots of action, you may still come up a few bucks short of your usual quarterly profits Be prepared!
If you can’t keep your profits up during the summer months to their accustomed levels, don’t despond. Prepare now; improve fall sales. This means, you guessed it, even more offers. You need to be one busy locomotive, dreaming up great offers, seeing what your competitors are doing, keeping the necessary stats, and also preparing to re-use what works.
10) Use any doldrums to perfect your sales machine.
When I go out and about, I am an inveterate scrutinizer of ad copy and whatever the establishment in question is doing for marketing. You must do the same, always anxious and eager to upgrade your crucial marketing machine. Become a marketing snoop; remember, even the tiniest and most lackluster business is doing something right. Your job is to find out what that is… then see whether your business could benefit from such techniques. You’ll get a ton of great ideas this way… and the money that follows your implementation.
Follow these sensible recommendations and your summer of 2011 will reach or even exceed some of those good old summertimes you have known… especially if you’ve got that tootie wootsie on your arm, for that is indeed a very good thing!

It happened yesterday…  “it” being the most frustrating thing that can happen now adays…”it” being the one eventuality absolutely certain to throw off your day and ensure you fall behind…”it” being the event guaranteed to change you from someone calm, reasonable, the nicest of people, to a mad person whose words could make a sailor blush.Your computer crashed… and you wondered what in God’s green acre you had done to warrant such a malady and imprecation. It just wasn’t fair…That’s what the computer crash does… and certain too. One of these days you are going to have “the crash”… the only real question is: will you be ready for it?What every boy scout knows… be prepared.Cambridge satirist Tom Lehrer  wrote a song (1953) when I was in first grade,a million years ago. It was called “Be Prepared!“. I thought of it forthe first time in years  yesterday as I surveyed the most important machine in my life just sitting there, non functional, turning me from an acutely productive member of society to drone, in an instant.”Be prepared! as through life you march along. Be prepared to hold your liquor pretty well,Don’t write naughty words on walls if you can’t spell”. Yes, I thought of Lehrer and his rollicking, rather sophomoric, school boy humor yesterday… as my world came to a screeching halt. Lehrer at least made me smile… Lehrer, that is, and the knowledge that I was prepared for The Crash.  Here’s how you can be prepared too and actually smile as you resolve one of life’s most aggravating and irritating problems.1) Make sure you copy your files. The most avoidable problem when  you work with computers is to lose files because you have not copied them in an organized, consistent fashion. This must be done completely, regularly — not intermittently, casually, whenever you getaround to it. That’s the wrong way for sure, completely unsystematic. Instead,  as I write articles like these, I make a copy of each paragraph as I write it; to do less would be to turn me from copywriter into gambler. And there is absolutely no need for that. To write is silver;  but to copy is gold.2) Print out details of key data you will need when (not if) your computer crashes. For instance, I have in my computer a list of vital telephone numbers. That’s just the thing you’ll need when your computer crashes. Make sure to print out a copy (from time to time, too, so that you have readily available the most current details) and have it easily accessible.3) Get an external hard drive. You just plug it in, back up your data, and then continue with the work at  hand.  It’s affordable. Most people and businesses can get by for one in the $100 price range. That’s peanuts compared to the actual and psychic costs of replacing data lost because of inadequate protection and preservation. Oh, yes, it’s light weight and portable, too;easily connected to any computer where you have data to be copied.4) Peruse notes of previous computer crises. You do have them, don’t you? Problems occur; the same problems may recur. Are you ready to solve them? You are if you wrote down the problem last time and clearly indicated what youdid to solve it. These notes are vital, given the fact that  the problem you have today may not recur for months, even years. Your notes, therefore, are necessary. Never assume you will remember the problem and what you did to solve  it.As soon as you have a  free minute after your computer is up and running, record the solution. This solution should not be left in the computer alone where some future crisis renders it inaccessible; you must print this and keep it in an off-computer file.5) Don’t sit in front of your computer and fret. That won’t help. One of my father’s favorite expressions was “a watch pot never boils.” Now I know what he meant… to sit in front of a non-functioning computer will only increase your unhappiness and discontent. Instead, if your computer remains on the fritz, turn your attention to other useful things you could be doing while you’re waiting for help (see below). If you spend as much time as I do on your computer (easily a consistent  12 hours a day), some other things in your life are bound to be neglected. Make “crash day” productive in other ways. I used the extra time to research a future article and while the computer on which I planned to write it was down, I made considerable progress, there by infusing some necessary uplift into this “what a revolting development this is” situation. 6) Have a trusted computer consultant at the ready. As soon as I knew yesterday’s computer crisis was beyond my admittedly limited technical skills, I placed the necessary call to my computer consultant Justin Lyttle of Help Desk Services, Hanover, Massachusetts. I received whatI have always received from Justin for many years: his prompt, full attention and (despite the fact it was Friday afternoon) the promise he would solve my problem promptly. This he did… arriving at about 6:00 p.m., getting down to business at once, solving my multi-part problem. Within an hour the problem was solved, and I was back online and Justin was on his way.People like Justin Lyttle are a find. A critical component of what makes youand your business (including your computer operations) successful is ensuring you have just the right competent and sympathetic people like Justin on your team. Neverwait to find them until  you are frantic. Remember your Tom Lehrer and be prepared; ask business people from your  neighborhood who they use… then call up to introduce yourself. Do ALL this before the pressing need arrives. Last words.Days of computer crisis are never pleasant, especially if you are technically challenged like I am. Still, if you follow these recommendations you’ll get through them as comfortably as possible.  Oh yes, just one more suggestion: keep ice cream in the refrigerator. Ithelps while away the time and makes you feel better until reinforcements arrive. Icecream is like that.

Author’s note. To get the most from this article, you will need to listen to three royal fanfares by Sir William Walton, the individual most responsible for the distinctive, rich, soaring sound that epitomizes, defines and glorifies the Windsor dynasty. These fanfares include
1) “Crown Imperial March”. 2) The incidental music for Sir Laurence Olivier’s 1944 production of “Henry V”. 3) “Orb and Sceptre March”.
You will find them in any search engine.
Image is everything.
Consider the singular problem of royalty, especially the most important royalty — sovereign emperors, kings, queens and queen consorts. They do not like us too close to their overpowering presence… but they certainly want to put their stamp on us and leave an indelible impression of grandeur, awe, majesty.
Towards this end, everything their subjects will see (and be able to be influenced and impressed by) is subjected to the most intense scrutiny and consideration. Everything must serve the greater end of the dynasty; the end being just how they are perceived by their subjects… so that the dynasty (with its mountain of anachronistic privileges) is preserved, protected, defended; the better to ensure these near immortals remain “long to reign over us”.
Amongst the most important aspects of how royalty presents itself to you so that they may rise higher and you make the necessary (and heartfelt) obeisance is the music used to suit their never-ending purpose; the music that dazzles the ear at the same time their clothes, jewels, uniforms, decorations and all the other accouterments dazzle the eye. Of these subjects, the things to capture the eye are by far more discussed than the music that accompanies royalty upon every significant occasion of their lives.
At the April, 2011 marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the major coverage went to two particular items: the bride’s gown and the two kisses the newly married couple made from the balcony at Buckingham Palace. By comparison a tiny percentage of mention went to the carefully chosen music, including Sir William Walton’s celebrated “Crown Imperial March”. Yes, here is where you heard that stirring fanfare first; although as it surrounded their royal highnesses, wafting them forward on a cloud of acoustic incense… you were paying attention to how the bride and groom looked and how they carried themselves leaving Westminster Abbey. The music was definitely secondary.
You knew the tableaux and its moving figures were perfect; you hardly gave a thought to the essential contribution of the fanfare, much less of Sir William Walton, its composer. Thus, the music does its essential work; moving you, influencing you, directing you where the dynasty wants your thoughts to be at that moment.
About Sir William Walton, (March 1902-March, 1983).
Walton was born into a musical family in Oldham, Lancashire. At age 16 he became an undergraduate at prestigious Christ Church at Oxford University. It was said at the time that he was the youngest undergraduate since King Henry VIII. His musical talents were quickly recognized and encouraged, particularly by the eccentric, talented, well-placed Sitwell family, Sir Sacheverell and his (distinctly odd) sister Edith. He lived with them for many years, while they “finished” their eager protege for the world. With Edith providing the lyrics, Walton composed the music for his first great success, Facade (1923). It established him as a member of the musical avant garde. But this designation (so pleasing to a young man with his way to make) proved short- lived and erroneous.
Walton’s strengths (and they were considerable) were not in inventing new forms, living on the cutting edge. No, indeed, he was no innovator… he was a traditionalist producing the incidental music for two great institutions — the British monarchy and Britain’s cinema. Such a role provided his numerous critics with what they needed to write him off as a “serious” composer… and made Walton wince, despite his celebrity and world-wide renown. It is often thus with those who are gifted in ways other than they planned or wanted… The coronation of 1937.
Walton was a painfully slow, plodding composer; composition came neither fluently nor with celerity. His works were relatively few, with long gaps between. Nonetheless, despite the nagging criticism of “modernists” who saw Walton as a renegade, his progress was inexorable. In due course he came to the notice of the British royal family, which took serious note of the “Walton” sound… soon to be the Windsor sound — exalted, elevated, often electrifying. The Windsors, having congratulated themselves on surviving the First World War (unlike all three imperial dynasties of Russia, Austria, Germany), soon had need of these very traits. The abdication of Edward VIII and the scandal which shook the monarchy to its foundation made them desperate to reassure the nation of their worthiness. And so Walton got the call of a lifetime, being asked to provide the entry music for Queen Mary, George V’s regal consort, the pillar of the dynasty.
Queens dowager didn’t attend coronations, but Queen Mary knew her presence would reassure the nation… and she wanted something dazzling to confirm her undeniable royalty. Walton gave her, and the world, his “Crown Imperial March”. (1937). The Windsors knew at once they had the sound they — and their challenged empire — needed… and the man who could produce it for them. It was a great gift in one of the worst years in British royal history… and they took Walton to their hearts as he, like his music, soared…
“Henry V” and Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation.
Walton was now the “go to” man when you wanted music that made showy outward display carried by the imperative commands of trumpets. Walton’s music made you sit up, take notice, and transcend yourself and your little cares. It was bombastic, a shade vulgar, but packed with the vitality and the testosterone the dynasty and the nation needed.
Of his many compositions exhibiting these grandiose traits, two more deserve mention: the film score for Sir Laurence Olivier’s 1944 production of Shakespeare’s “Henry V” and Walton’s “Orb and Sceptre March” for the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Walton, in his way, was as much a pillar of the monarchy and Britain herself as Queen Mary. He lifted people up when they needed it (World War II) and when a wounded nation faced post-war austerity. His music showed you why “this band of brothers” (in “Henry V”) was victorious despite great odds against them… and why the Phoenix of England would rise again with the coronation of the new, young sovereign. It is no wonder a grateful monarch gave him knightly honors and the most prestigious Order of Merit. Thus was recognized and rewarded the grandeur of Sir William Walton who made the dynasty itself and all its princes grander still.

‘…. it’s raining violets.’

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant Author’s note. Before you read this article, give yourself the right musical accompaniment, “April Showers” sung by Al Jolson. Jolson made many recordings of this famous song. The music was written by Louis Silvers, the lyrics by B. G. De Sylva; it was first sung by Jolson in the 1921 Broadway musical “Bombo”. A quick search of any search engine should yield this pip of a song with the inimitable Jolson touch that soon made him a household name. “April Showers” spurred him on his way; it will help us on ours, too. Acres of violets… nestled amongst the trees… quiet… serene… so abundant, unforgettable by sunlight… irresistible by moonlight… attired in transient glory for the midnight visit of Titania and all her court… you fell asleep too early to see… These are the violets of my youth… and I cannot see a single blossom without being seized by the memory of their beauty. That is why, when the spring comes and the May violets with it, I prefer to walk alone through Cambridge streets, so that when I find the patches of violets I know so well, I can allow myself the bittersweet sensation of remembrance. A companion on these walks, so desirable so often, is de trop in violet season. Such a one would try to be congenial, amiable, a real friend. But that is not what you want when the violets come…. you want what only you can recall… the memory of youth, beauty, of endless time for squandering and of the springtime of your life, when your life was just for living, and all life’s miseries and injunctions were yet to come, not present realities. The violets saw it all and smiled… for no one knew better than they how brief that season was. But they didn’t share that insight with you… they knew it would come soon enough on its own. And so it did, thus closing this time in all but memory. Each violet seen is a bridgeway to that memory… and precious so. The violets of Woodward Avenue. Winters in the heartland of America which is Illinois, are hard, interminable, testing the fortitude of every living thing, all longing for release and the clemency of spring. By February you are desperate for relief… and while the snow may stop for an instant, the mud does not. It is everywhere, not least in the places you are sternly admonished never to track it. But the mud is more insistent upon going in with you, than you are in heeding the insistent admonition. Out of this rich mud, the mud that feeds America and the world, come the violets in rampancy and profusion. Their job is to obliterate the despondent memories of winter… and create the moment when you, turning a corner, see them in all their glory, catching your breath and (without even knowing) breathing a paean of pure thanks for this flicker of time, forever magnificent; now ineffably part of your soul. Some facts about violets. Viola is a genus of flowering plants in the violet family Violaceae, with around 400-500 species distributed around the world. Most species are found in the temperate Northern Hemisphere; however, viola species (commonly called violets, pansies, or heartsease) are also found in widely divergent areas such as Hawaii, Australasia, and the Andes in South America. Flower colors vary in the genus, ranging from violet, as their common name suggests, through various shades of blue, yellow, white, and cream, whilst some types are bicolored, often blue and yellow. Many cultivars and hybrids have been bred in a greater spectrum of colors. Flowering is often profuse, and may last for much of the spring and summer. Edible violets. Violets are not only wonderful to look at; they titillate the palate in surprising ways. Violets have a delicate, sweet and sometimes peppery flavor. Before including them in your next salad, however, reaping the advantages of their abundant antioxidants, have a care. Violets are good for you; some flowers that resemble violets are not. These include spring larkspur and monkshood, which are in fact poisonous. This suggests the plot for a murder mystery suitable for “Masterpiece Theatre”. Miss Honeycroft, though no longer young, was appreciated by hostesses for her wit and lively humor of a literary kind; her well-tended violets were much admired… it came as a great shock to the community when her body was found amongst them, jarring in bright red riding boots and nothing more… Kinky. Who would water the violets now? Special warning: Be extra careful not to add African violets to that salad, even just a few. African violets, beloved of grandmothers worldwide (including mine) are so named because of their resemblance to violets, although they are not true violets and are absolutely not edible; neither are the rhizome or roots of any violets. They are poisonous to humans. More ways to eat violets. Violets may be sauteed like spinach and added to stir-fry vegetables. Wild violets also have a somewhat viscous texture when cooked which is used in traditional cooking as a thickener for soups and stews. But while I am sure you like a good stew so prepared… I am surer you crave the sweeter uses of violets…. Violets are a symbol of everlasting love and the enduring passion which their purple color suggests. Remember, this color, in Ancient Rome and Byzantium, was reserved for emperors… the highest placed mortals on earth. Now swept away, you can enjoy some of their rarefied delights. To make candied violet flowers, pick a large number of flowers and let them dry on a paper towel for a couple of hours. Beat an egg white to a froth, and color it with food coloring, if desired. Using a fine brush, carefully coat each flower with the egg white, then pour fine sugar over each. Blend the sugar in your blender to make it a finer consistency. Lay each flower on wax paper to dry, then use as a decoration for your confections when the flowers are stiff enough to move. This will impress the special one in your life. But you want more than to impress, don’t you? You want to ensnare this person forever and forever passionately. Admit it. Here violets are essential. Offer your beloved “Parma violets”, a select British tablet confectionery manufactured by the Derbyshire-based company Swizzels Matlow. For maximum effect, offer, too, a glass of Creme Yvette, made from Parma violets, the most luxurious and lush violets of all. Rarer than rare, this liqueur has not been made for decades… giving it will therefore make the desired impression… and ensure the total submission of the one you crave to distraction. Such is the enduring power of the violet, in the wild or distilled. “So if it’s raining, have no regrets, Because it it isn’t raining rain you know, It’s raining violets…” Run outside now and seize them… and this moment… before they and it pass away forever, to your certain regret.

'Green grow the lilacs, all sparkling with dew.' Haunting, evocative, elegiac, the lilacs return to Brattle St.., Cambridge, May 7, 2011.

To get you in the mood click on this link comments are always welcome
by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
I was out early today. Even before dawn’s first light, I was up and about and soon on my mission… to find the first bunches of lilac, and drink in their unmistakable scent with the pristine dew.
What passersby (not too numerous so early) must have thought to see the flowers held against my face, though gently so as not to crush them, I cannot say. I did not care. The lilacs that I love to excess have returned to Cambridge… and with them every memory of this most evocative of flowers and their flagrant, haunting fragrance.
Beloved of Russian empresses…
One day the great Empress Catherine of all the Russias (1762-1796) went walking in her garden of Tsarskoe Selo and found a branch of lilacs, so perfect she was sure it would be picked to amplify the bouquet of some lovelorn lad to his much desired lady…  so she stationed a soldier next to this lovely branch. In 1917, a soldier was still stationed where the plant no longer flowered or even existed. But then Tsar Nicholas II wasn’t surprised… for his wife Alexandra, called “Sunny”, loved lilacs to distraction, too… and created a room in the most palatial of palaces where everything was in a shade of lilac. It became, in due course, the most famous room of the empire…
My grandmother Victoria had this same tendresse for her much loved and coddled lilacs. She craved their scent and their colors, too, in every shade of purple… heliotrope, mauve, violet, lavender, puce, and all the other variations. Even my grandmother’s perfume, Muguet de Bois by Coty (launched 1941) featured lilac… and  lily-of-the valley. Proust-like, that scent brings her back… as does my mother’s Chanel. Lilac is like that. It will not be denied and can never be resisted.
And now the lilacs are in rampant bloom along Tory Row on  Brattle Street, breathtaking, sensual, glorious. The Loyalists would have remembered them for all the rest of their long lives; the merest hint of their scent would trigger the painful memories that come with unending exile.
A few facts about lilacs.
You may be surprised to  learn (I was) that syringa (lilac) is a genus of about 20 to 25 species of flowering woody plants in the olive family (Oleaceae) native to woodland and scrub from southeastern Europe to eastern Asia.
They are deciduous shrubs or small trees, ranging in size from 2 to 10 meters (6 feet 7 inches to 32 feet 10 inches) tall, with stems up to 20 to 30 centimeters (7.9 to 12 inches) in diameter.
The leaves are opposite (occasionally in whorls of three) in arrangement, and their shape is simple and heart-shaped.
The flowers are produced in spring and are bisexual, with fertile stamens and stigma in each flower. The usual flower color is a shade of purple (generally a light purple or lilac), but white, pale yellow and pink, even a dark burgundy color are known. Flowering varies between mid spring to early summer, depending on the species.
The fruit is a dry, brown capsule, splitting in two at maturity to release the two winged seeds that have within them everything that produces the lustrous magnanimity of the lilac and commands your eye and reverence.
The poets irresistible attraction to and understanding of lilacs.
Poets, including many notable poets, saw lilacs and wished, in words, to produce the lyric quality of their scent. The scent, the unforgettable scent, swept them away. It was exuberant, excessive, a warning to the dangers of immersion in a thing so powerful, so rich, so cloying; a thing that draws you away from the little duties and miseries of life and whispers of pleasures you want beyond reason. Too much of this unalloyed richness gives way to madness… and exultation.
Amy Lowell (1874-1925) knew the potency of lilacs. She wrote
“Your great puffs of flowers Are everywhere in this my New England… Lilacs in dooryards Holding quiet conversations with an early moon; Lilacs watching a deserted house Settling sideways into the grass of an old road; Lilacs, wind-beaten, staggering  under a lopsided shock of bloom….”
And then….
“You are everywhere. You were everywhere.”
Lilacs know their power and seduce you with it, every wind wafting the scent into your brain and memory.  They offer you the same terms that a beautiful woman offers the man distracted by her — none at all,  just surrender. Lilacs are the sorceress of blooms, enchanting, elusive, sharing their magic for an instant… leaving you longing for what you fear you will never have again.
The flower of elegy, mourning, decay, death.
Lilacs are the flower of remembrance. After the fall of Tsar Nicholas II and the entire structure of tsardom, the ex-emperor and his wife Alexandra found themselves prisoners of the new regime, forbidden even to walk in the magnificent park at Tsarskoe Selo. Alexandra looked out upon an ocean of lilac, once hers, now as distant as the moon. Her haunted look, beyond mere dismay, touched the heart of a simple soldier. He gave her a sprig. His officer saw this as “fraternizing with the enemy” and had him shot.
Amy Lowell, too, saw lilac as an accoutrement of death.
“The dead fed you Amid the slant stones of graveyards. Pale ghosts who planted you Came in the nighttime and let their thin hair blow through your clustered stems.”
Walt Whitman (1819-1892) also knew the immemorial association between lilacs and death, and he gave us the simple words that bespoke the greatest tragedy:
“When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom’d, And the great star early droop’d in the western sky in the night, I mourn’d, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.”
He picked a sprig of lilac and thought of the passing into eternity of Abraham Lincoln, “Night and day journeys a coffin.” It is unbearably painful for him, only the simple words — and the lilac — with its promise to return — giving solace, for that is within the power of the lilac, too, which Whitman knew and relied on:
“Copious I break, I break the sprigs from the bushes, With loaded arms I come, pouring for you, For you and the coffins all of you O death.”
But this cannot be the last word on lilacs, not this.
Think instead of Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play “Green Grow the Lilacs”, the basis for the libretto of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma,” a musical about real people and their real concerns. They brought lilac seeds with them to beautiful their often difficult lives because they couldn’t bear the thought of life without its beauty, comfort and serenity. And I cannot either.
