One of the proudest days of my life… the day I give you Internet success through a unique gift you can only get from me!

Ludwig van Beethoven (1820) by Joseph Karl Stieler
By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Author’s program note. Today is a red-letter day for me… one of the most important days of my life. For such a day nothing short of one of our weary world’s greatest masterpieces, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” (1824), will do . Please play it before you read this article. You cannot but feel the thrill and exultation. If a human being can do this, human beings can do anything. Find it in any search engine and turn up the volume. Then you’ll know how I am feeling now as I prepare to give you a gift only I can give and which has taken me a lifetime to perfect.
Deaf… sublime.
When great Beethoven sat down to compose his 9th Symphony, of which the “Ode to Joy” is perhaps the most celebrated part, he was stone deaf. Yet in his capacious, extraordinary brain the music rang out to thrill the world. He could have said, “a deaf person cannot compose,” everyone would have understood such a conclusion and offered the usual words of sympathy… but that is not the way of people with a mission to improve the world. They recognize no obstacle! Do not give way to defeatism! And reach deep into themselves to find what they alone can give the world and its people who rely upon such genius for relief! Instruction! And improvement! For you see those who have such a gift must give such a gift… and today I give such a gift, the greatest I have ever given, to each of you.
The struggling world… and the profound promise of the Internet.
I have now been on the Internet over 18 years, about a third of my life. During these years I have witnessed humanity’s struggle to make sense of this monumental invention which has the undoubted power and demonstrated potential to connect people everywhere and enable them to say what they want to say without shackle or inhibition.
Now think a moment: for the first time, the very first time, in the long cycles of humanity each person can, with the simple expedient of an Internet connection, present himself, in all his wonderful uniqueness, to others who have the ardent desire to do the same, without the pernicious intrusion of any of the world’s Thought Police who have intervened with impunity and malice in all previous epochs.
The Internet brooks no interference… no one telling you what you can do…when you can do it. Yes, for the first time in human history each person has a voice that can be heard… that must be heard…. and so transform the world — for good and ill.
Is it any wonder then that I have selected “Ode to Joy” and recommended that you play it now… for on our troubled planet we need all the help we can get and the Internet is here to provide it.
Commerce…
From the very first minute far sighted folk saw that such a means of connection could prove to be a superb means of commerce. But how? Most didn’t know and so, without guidance, commenced a struggle which left them frustrated, confounded, angry and, too often, embittered. How, they wondered, could this astonishing invention produce a golden outcome for them? It was a question that millions asked — and continue to ask — but which only a comparative handful have ever answered successfully. With the almost daily assistance of my cherished partners George Kosch and Sandi Hunter, I have found such success… and been given the opportunity to give it to others. Today we celebrate that opportunity and its ability to uplift! Enrich! And empower people worldwide.
It all started with a blank sheet of paper.
I am not just a writer, but a published writer, which is a very different thing. To write to connect should be every writer’s objective… and it has certainly been my objective since my first article appeared in print 59 years ago, when I was 5 years old. You may well imagine what a heady thing it must be for that child, any child to experience such excitement. Once you’ve had it, you spend the rest of your life wanting more and doing what is necessary to get it. In this regard I have been most fortunate… having written thousands of articles and 18 books, mostly on business themes. My word has been carried — and frequently, too — on radio, television and on the lecture circuit. But my connection with the Internet has radically transformed the entire matter of content and given me the means to give you substantial advantage every single day.
How?
As I have often said and frequently written and emphasized, “the list is the business, the business is the list.” Thus each person desiring to succeed in business must spend a significant amount of time building a list, and this activity must be a part of each and every day that you desire to remain in business and increase your profit.
But maintaining your list, growing your list cannot, on the Internet, be your sole objective; that would be protecting your list and ensuring that you can use it daily to email ad copy to your subscribers. The problem is, if you only email ads day after day to these subscribers, they will quickly become disenchanted, even disgusted, with you… and manifest their displeasure by unsubscribing your list, thereby depriving them of all benefits you offer and yourself of their golden custom.
This is the exact situation in which most Web marketers find themselves… and why so many of these people are killing their lists, thereby killing their profits.
Here’s where I — and Bill Gates — enter the scene and why you need to pay attention to our message. Gates has famously and enigmatically said of the Internet, “Content is king.” What does he mean? Just that people will not put up with an unceasing avalanche of ad copy; they need more, much more. They need content… and if you create a blog and give them this content you can accompany it — every day — with the ad copy that generates the revenue. Problem is, most people cannot write engaging, meaningful copy and cannot afford the cost of hiring the people who could create such copy for them; it’s just too expensive.
That’s where I come in… I can and will produce such copy — for free. And today we recognize and celebrate the completion of the first 365 articles, one for every day of the year. These articles, all about 1500 words in length, are timely, intelligent, often provocative, always informative and, my signature and pride, beautifully written. Let me explain the importance of these articles and why you are fortunate to have them: they save your all-important lists from being destroyed by your subscribers, people who want more than a steady diet of ads and as such are invaluable.
Let us be very clear with each other: if you email nothing but ads, you will kill your list and thus obliterate your business. Thus, you have these options. Email the ads anyway and test my thesis (suicidal); try to write such copy every single day yourself (highly unlikely given your writing skills). Or you could hire the necessary talent to do the work, thereby breaking the bank. Or…
You could use the copy I have created for you… and which I give to you, thereby enabling your list and with it your business to grow and flourish while I provide the necessary (and always beautifully written) copy. And that is why we are celebrating today… not just for what I have written… or how well I have written — but because with these often lyric articles I am keeping your online business on the profit path.
“You millions I embrace you,” and give you the best of which I am capable for our mutual joy — freude! So now finish as we began… with Beethoven and his “Ode to Joy”. For we, now working together, have everything to be joyful about! Let the celestial sound soar… as we do — together! Freude!

Home truths from an old hand about what it takes to succeed online. You may not like them but you need them!

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Every day thousands of people worldwide wake up and, hey presto!, have a great idea: I’m going to set up a business for myself online. Tons of people have done that and oodles of money is being made.
Now hear this: you are now and truly entering the twilight zone… and I want to help you get through it with maximum success and minimum frustration.
Who am I? Well, I am an old Internet hand who, since 1994, has made his primary work place the Internet and has reaped over the years a very ample reward. Now it is time for me to share with you some of the lessons of these years of learning, growth, and profits.
I know what you’re thinking: “Yikes, another old geezer from ancient times trying to help me by offering useless advice that never in a million years could possibly apply to me and my situation.” Is that how you feel when those more experienced than you are (and more successful) offer up their nuggets of wisdom? If so, reconsider and feast your eyes on this:
Item: Most home-based Internet businesses fail unless they have certain crucial criteria in place. Without these factors, you will fail, too.
Item: Your online business is most vulnerable if you have never previously been involved in business and have limited Internet experience. The failure rate here is staggering.
Item: You are at severe risk if you are trying to run a one-person online business and have no one else to advise and counsel you. This is very likely the situation in which you find yourself right this minute. You will soon discover why one is the loneliest — and least successful — number.
Now, have I got your attention?
The minute you decided you wanted to make money online, you became a failure waiting to happen. That’s why you must pay close attention to the recommendations that follow. Not only are they the result of many successful years online, they are heartfelt, because online helpful friends are few and far between… and should be listened to with the utmost respect, even if you don’t like what they’re telling you.
Home truth number 1: Life online for most would-be Internet entrepreneurs is nasty, brutish and short. It looks like this: decide to have an online business, get a website, then…. absolutely nothing. No traffic! No customers! No money! You will know this description applies to you very, very soon if you are being at all honest with yourself.
How long have you been trying to make money online?
How much have you made?
How much have you spent to launch this e-enterprise?
How much time have you wasted?
What makes you think tomorrow will be better than yesterday?
These are tough questions… and most online business wannabees never do demand answers from themselves… or at least not before it’s too little too late.
Home truth number 2: You don’t know enough about developing your crucial prospect list.
People who make money online know that the list is the business and the business is the list. Do you know this and are you focusing your expertise, time and money in developing that all important list? Or are you focusing on such inessential factors as the colors used on your website, your domain name, how many business cards you should order, etc? All such questions collectively do not have the importance and significance of this single query: what did you do today, yesterday, the day before yesterday and the day before that to build the list, the list that is the business and from whence all your profits will derive, now and forever?
Home truth number 3: You have no marketing experience or success.
Who succeeds online? People who know what marketing is, have important marketing experience, and know what marketing they must know and do daily. Sadly, the wannabees have absolutely none of these things and their lack is both obvious and fatal. You cannot succeed in business online (or off for that matter) with only rudimentary marketing skills, hoping that that will be enough. It won’t be. A thorough practical knowledge of reality-based marketing is essential. You proceed at your peril without it.
Home truth number 4: Success online means having the ability to write cogent advertising and other copy.
How are your customer-centered writing skills? The truth, please, and nothing but the truth.
Successful Internet entrepreneurs are to a person good customer-centered writers. Or if they’re not they have solved that problem by hiring someone who is. Thus, your question is this: can I write the necessary copy that gets prospects to stop in their tracks, pay attention, peruse the offer and product details, and act? Merely “thinking” you can write such copy is just not good enough. Would you go sailing in a leaky boat? Then don’t deceive yourself here either. Excellent copywriting skills are a must.
Home truth number 5: You’re not selling nearly enough products.
Want success online? Sell lots of products. Want even more success? Sell lots more. Success online directly correlates to how many products you sell and your skill in presenting them.
How many products are you selling today?
How many yesterday? The day before?
If you are not adding new products daily, you are handicapping your ability to make money online.
Every successful online entrepreneur is engaged in a strenuous search and discover mission aimed at finding more products.
Are you? If not, your Internet obsequies are near at hand.
Home truth number 6: You are not skilled in essential traffic generation techniques.
In real estate, it’s location, location, location.
Online, it’s traffic, traffic, traffic.
The sad truth is you traffic generation skills and experience are minimal, certainly inadequate to generate the necessary traffic that ensures success.
Hopefully you’ll admit this is true. Then, assuming you are willing to knuckle down and master traffic essentials, the better to create and grow your list, you at least have a prayer.
However, if you do not have the necessary traffic generation skills… and remain unwilling to say so and do something about it, you’re DOA… 100% certain to fail.
Home truth number 7… but I must cease and desist as my space for today is now at an end. There is, of course, much more I can tell you… and undoubtedly will. For now, promise me this: that you will attend closely to these deeply honest observations. And when you implement them successfully, you’ll let me know. I’d like to know how you’re getting on, with my help.

After 17 successful years online, I know the secret of Internet success. I’m spilling the beans right here.

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Author’s program note. Because today, August 1, 2011, is such a happy day, I wanted something suitably grand and festive to accompany this article; the kind of music that makes you want to jump up, throw up the sash on your window and, at the top of your voice, shout “Huzzah!”, because you want the rest of the too weary and downtrodden world to be as excited as you are. I’ve found that music.
It’s a royal German military march called “Hohenfriedberger marsch”, and you’ll find it in any search engine. Go get it now and let one of the most soaring of marches lift your spirits and put you in the right frame of mind to develop your own online empire into a place where such grandeur is an everyday event… and where you do so well your generosity of heart, mind and spirit match mine on this anniversary day.
Over the last 17 years online, I have talked to literally thousands of people who have begged, wheedled and pleaded with me to reveal the “secret” of Internet success. It is now my pleasure to tell you, tell all, withholding nothing.
1) Never say “How do I make money online?”. Say instead, “How can I help my customers achieve what they want?”
People who succeed online make a fetish of helping people. They know that if you give enough people what they want… you will surely and most assuredly get what you want.
This sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? A piece of cake. However, you must never underestimate the powerful pull of human ego, selfishness, and self- destructive avarice. In short, humans find it difficult to focus on others, rather than themselves. Yet it is and will always be these others who control your ability to get rich online.
I tell my marketing students “Your money is in their pockets,” the “their” being your customers. The only way to get it out is by completely changing your focus from yourself to…. them.
Cautionary note: Like everyone reading this article, you will pledge your online operations to complete customer centeredness… and for a day or two you will be an empathetic paragon. Then imperceptibly you will slide back into the inveterate selfishness that condemns so many Internet entrepreneurs to humiliating, unnecessary failure. Remember: humans are born selfish, but it is only the customer-centered who succeed. Post this message so that you never forget, for to the extent you do is the extent to which you’ll undercut and block your own success.
2) Make it easy for your customers to connect with you.
We live in an age of true communication marvels with a myriad of ways to connect, connect fast, connect now. The problem is, we don’t use them properly, rather infuriating customers by misusing these tools, or, worse, not using them at all… so that the age of instant contact becomes instead the age of thwarted contact. Are you one of the culprits?
First, review each and every means you have for people connecting with you, including email, telephone, fax, etc., etc.
Then review them as if you were the customer. Look at how you use them. When you use them. Even whether you use them.
Are you a customer enabler… or are you a customer frustrater and avoider? You’ll SAY that you are doing everything humanly possible to expedite and improve customer contact and communication. But in all likelihood you’re not. The only way you’re going to know is by acting like a customer, ascertaining just how easy (or difficult) you’ve made things. You’re likely to be amazed at the maze and obstacles you’ve erected to frustrate customer relations. As soon as you know, re-arrange things so that you don’t just THINK you are customer-centered, but actually are.
3) Make an offer… then make a better offer.
To make money, give things away. To make more money, give more things away.
The richest people online are those who give the most away. They spend their days not just creating and discovering useful new products and services. That’s necessary and essential for success… but it isn’t the key variable. That key variable is the extras, the special offer you’re going to give customers for acting NOW! In other words, the all-important offer.
Now hear this: OFFERS are what get people to buy now… thus, the better the offer, the faster the sale. It’s as simple as that. So, let’s see what you’re doing now and whether the offers you’re making will take you to the financial destiny you desire.
First, are you making any offers at all? You’d be surprised at how many entrepreneurs have a “take it or leave it” attitude about what they’re selling… punctuated with this killer proposition: “what I’m selling is so good, it sells itself.” This is one of the most foolish of propositions. Nothing, absolutely nothing, sells itself. But if you don’t have a special enticing, motivating offer with what you’re selling then you’ve cooked your own goose. Immediate re-thinking is necessary.
If you’re making some kind of offer, good for you. At least, you’ve got you r foot on the right road. Now let’s see whether you’ve got what it takes to move ahead. Review your offer in the light of what your competitors are doing, easy enough on the Web. If what you’re offering to induce immediate sale is only as good as (or less than) what your competitors are offering… then you’ve got a serious problem… and you need some serious action at once.
The offer you make, the offer that delivers the sales and the cash, must be demonstrably better than anything offered by anyone… and the customer must be able to see this at a glance….
4) Create a customer-centered blog and use it daily.
Over the last 17 years online there has been one astonishing development after another. One of the most important is the creation and development of blogging; it’s a device that every successful Internet entrepreneur understands and uses daily, the better to achieve more substantial success.
You will succeed online only to the extent you understand blogging and blog daily. Let’s start by helping you understand why it’s so important. A blog gives you the opportunity to send out advertisements daily, without risking your list as people do who email ads and nothing but ads. Your blog is anchored by useful articles and information. These client-centered articles and information protect the integrity of your list. So long as your ads are accompanied by this useful content, you can email your list regularly. Sending ads alone cannot achieve the desired objective; instead you’ll list will dwindle into insignificance.
Enjoy the game.
Successful online entrepreneurs know they’ve participating in the greatest game of our time, a game that delivers customers and customer sales 24 hours a day and can turn even the smallest home business into an unstoppable cash cow. And isn’t that just what you want?
Don’t wait another minute to get started. Put a smile on your face and set about the task before you, making liberal reference to these recommendations. It’s the way to ensue 17 years of success online, as I’ve had, with many more successful years after that.

If you’re lucky and work hard, you get the partners you need to be the business success you desire. Here’s a tribute to mine.

From the song Friendship: “If you’re ever in a jam, here I am / If you’re ever in a mess, S.O.S / If you ever feel so happy you land in jail / I’m your bail / It’s friendship …”
By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Author’s program note. I didn’t have to think twice about the music to accompany this important article. It’s “Friendship” recorded in 1940 by Judy Garland and Johnny Mercer. You’ll find it in any search engine. Go now. When you find it, give a  listen. It’s a peppy little number, touched by American corniness and with a special message for wartime: we’re in this together.  And not just in war, either.
The well-lived life is a series of absolutely essential relationships… parents to child, sibling to sibling, spouse to spouse… and business partner to business partner.
Luck, of course, the kismet that erratically injects itself into the business of living, is a always an  unpredictable factor… but so is the ability to seize that opportunity when it knocks… and to grow it into your personal empire. This is  the story of one particular man who when serendipity came, seized it with gratitude and enthusiasm, riding it for a lifetime of security, profit, and, yes, affection, the plus perfect beneficiary of partnership, its care and maintenance.
“A fairy tale.”
My 87-year-old father, a lifetime of business success under his belt, one day startled me with his description of my nearly 20 year relationship with:Sandi Hunter and George Kosch. “It’s a fairy tale,” he said. “That’s what it is.” What he meant was that this was a relationship which, on the surface, was improbable, even unlikely; but which once existing one could never imagine being without. Let me tell you how it happened…
One day nearly 20 years go, the telephone rang in my Cambridge, Massachusetts office. It was George Kosch. This call was the result of a crucial business marketing insight and tactic: always make it easy for your customers to find you and connect with you. I was, I believe, the first author in the history of authors to include follow-up details (and a catalog, no less) in every copy of every book I wrote; (to date there have been 18 such). Such vital, business-building details were also included with every article as well as with the usual business marketing communications. They were also, and powerfully, supplied to the world each time I went on radio, television, and ultimately the ‘net. Over time this constant infusion of total follow-up information provided a fruitful critical mass that resulted in a constant stream of leads… and lucrative, fortune-building business.
George was one of the many people who responded… and responded… and responded. For I was that most normal and prosaic of prospects: the one who wasn’t paying much attention to what the marketer was trying so hard to get me to see. Like all prospects, when George The Marketer rang my phone (as, remember, he had been invited to do in one of my books) I had other fish to fry, other places to go, other people to meet. Now from a distance of 20 years (and everything therein) I shudder when I think of how nearly life might have been so very different. Here the “what if’s” surface…
What if he hadn’t bought the book?
What if he hadn’t read it?
What if he hadn’t believed my invitation to follow-up and so didn’t do it?
What if he had not followed-up when I, already comfortable and with too much to do, didn’t pay attention… since follow up was necessary and required to make the future happen?
Faced by such questions, one at last, and perforce, comes to believe, no matter how rooted in rationalism you may be, in the power of kismet… what my father called the “fairy tale”.
But George knew this about marketing: that if you have carefully selected your prospect… and you are sure of the benefits you can deliver… then, to get the benefits you want, you must try and try again to induce your prospect to stop! Pay attention! Get enthused! And, finally, desire what you wish him to desire. And George did just that, introducing me to a subject I knew nothing about… which was to become the basis for the remainder of my life. George Kosch, then as now, was a visionary… far ahead of everyday reality.
I didn’t know it, although it is to my credit that I quickly came to see, but I was firmly rooted in the past… while he was a link to the future. I had made a fortune from publishing books, specialized card-deck advertising, and from the laborious, fatiguing and very lucrative lecture circuit which at its height saw me lecturing on a regular basis at nearly 30 colleges and universities and at one professional association after another. It was a grueling pace. George offered something better: he offered the future… and no man can ever be offered a better, more compelling gift.
“The Offer”.
George snagged my attention finally and for good when he offered me, via his electronic bulletin board, the opportunity to bring my popular business columns (which appeared in both print and in my nationally syndicated radio program) to a wider audience. I didn’t need to be offered twice. Here’s why…
In those days, these bulletin boards were wildly popular. From our vantage point with the glorious Web in place, it may be difficult for some to conjure up their attraction, but it was substantial. I remember one never-to-be-forgotten dinner party I attended where every guest, posting messages throughout dinner, kept jumping up to see all the avalanche of responses which just kept pouring in. It was rude, of course… but it was undeniably exciting and eye-opening. George Kosch offered a way into The Way Things Would Be, Like It Or Not!
I so liked it, and was so intrigued, that I flew to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada… because, by then, I had an inkling that in this unlikely place, with its uncongenial temperatures, my future was to be found… and I was right.
There at the airport, young, good looking, friendly, curious of course about their guest, were George Kosch and Sandi Hunter. I can see this moment sharply in my mind’s eye. It was a meeting full of possibilities which became, through careful stages, probabilities… then certainties. I have been a student of humanity since the day my eyes first opened on the human comedy… here I found two of the best. The first impression was impressive; nothing that has happened since has done anything but improve it.
The three of us promptly decided on a partnership which I think I may safely say has proven so beneficial to us all — and the world we have served. Here are some of the reasons why it works so well:
1) We each have our fields of expertise and so defer to  the experts in their area. George takes care of the technology he knows so well; Sandi is an expert in Web design and handles all the myriad “back office” and customer service details. There her deft touch, efficiency, organization and, above all, kindness are put to the test daily. She never fails. I remain what I have always been, the marketing man, the creator of endless blog copy.
2) We say less  than we know. A  successful relationship is predicated upon empathy, discretion, a carefully nurtured ability to know what to say, how and when to say it. It means giving up the often destructive luxury of saying anything that comes to mind. This is what the young and careless do, thinking they are honest, when they are simply immature.
3) We value the others and say so. We are, they from Ontario, me from Illinois, by heritage reserved. But that only make our words, when given, the more affecting. We make it a point to remember… for it easy to take for granted that which must always be recalled and celebrated. We do not take each other for granted.
4) Above all else, we are there for each other. I have never had to struggle to make these fine people adhere to any undertaking; they have never had to remind me to do something promised. Lifelong relationships flourish because the people  involved do what they say they are going to do… their word indeed their bond.
With such people, success, while never inevitable, is likely… and so it has been.
Which is why, soon to be 65, I embrace each day with unbridled enthusiasm… for I know that I am making the next portion of the great adventure of my life with just the right people. When you find yours, grab on to them as if your life depends on it, for it does…

In the good, old summertime, prepare for the fall sales season, because that’s where the money’s at.

July 19, 2011 | Author: Jeffrey Lant | Posted in Dr. Jeffrey Lant’s Article Archive

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Author’s program note. In 1949, America’s darling, Judy Garland, starred in a big budget MGM musical called “In the Good Old Summertime”. It was all twirling parasols, Sunday at the gazebo in the park with the grandly uniformed band playing Sousa marches, and, of course, innocent romances. The word “tootsie-wootsie” was coined… and we all wanted to know one we could take to the church ice-cream social.
But before you get all gussied up in your best bib and tucker, there’s work to do, very important work… making headway on the most important task of all: preparing for that absolutely crucial fall sales season, relentlessly on its way; the season starting just after Labor Day in early September… and concluding the minute you lock up and go home to celebrate Christmas with your family.
Successfully handling the fall sales season, the highlight of your business, is a must… for, after all, you’re going to need a lot of extra cash this year… “tootsie-wootsie’s” (of either the female or male variety) are never cheap. So, don’t stint on the planning…
To help you get into the mood, go to any search engine. Find Judy Garland’s tune and play it a couple of times. Then, while the lilt of the music washes over you, begin what needs to be done for the most successful fall of your life. And don’t dilly-dally either, or all the lemon sorbet will be gone before you put on your straw boater and head for that social where you, known to be an up-and-coming business wiz, will make. such a good impression…
Here’s a helpful check-list to get you on your way:
1) Start today.
As I write (July 19, 2011) a blistering heat wave is causing large parts of America to swoon. You need to rise above the shimmering heat and FOCUS. He (or she) who hesitates is lost. Remember, you plan in the summer… and implement your plan in the fall. If you don’t plan until fall, you will find yourself in the impossible situation of planning and executing your plan at the same time. And that’s a killer.
2) Conclude all training programs as soon as possible.
Summer is and always has been a superb time to learn new business skills. But learning them means exactly that; not a time for dawdling and procrastinating, which you can easily do if the course is self-paced, as so many are these days. Put yourself on a strict deadline for completion… and stick to it.
3) Set up your blog and begin to stockpile articles for it. Summer’s a great time to bulk-up on articles so that you’re not scrambling for copy, when you need to be circulating it.
You should always have at least half a dozen such articles readily at hand, punchy, well-written articles that will get your customers to stop what they’re doing and read your latest effusion.
4) Work on creating and testing offers that pull the best.
You need offers that pull in maximum business, and the summer is the perfect time to create — and test — them. This testing is a must. The worst thing you can do is amble into the fall without knowing you’ve got offers that sell on hand and ready to go.
Review the top offers you’ve already made this year. Can you reprise any, editing, tweaking, improving for the best possible results? And be sure to check the offers you made last fall. You did keep good statistics on results, didn’t you? That’s crucial, so you invest your always limited ad budget where it’ll do you the most good.
5) Work on increasing your traffic.
For years I have said “The list is the business, the business is the list.” On the Internet, the operative word for list is “traffic”. With it, you’re lord of all you survey; without it, you’re just a schlepper without a prayer.
Every successful Internet entrepreneur I know (and few people in the world know more) has a daily traffic plan, which they are rightly obsessed with creating, improving and implementing. These people know how to create the solid-gold lists that deliver ever improving results and how to present offers so that the people on these lists just cannot resist responding — and buying.
Still more tips!
6) Review your website. Are you happy with the way it looks, or is it time for some refurbishment and remodeling?
The website that looked so good and eye-catching yesterday may well be in need of some overdue improvements today. If you can make them, fine; if you can’t contact your web designer at once. Remember, as the fall approaches these talented folks are very in demand. Book your time as soon as possible.
7) Add new products to your website.
Every business in the world adds new products to its line in time for the fall sales season, and you must do the same.
Now’s the moment to review your product line and add the hot new products you’ve found.
Don’t have any such products? Then you’ve got to shake a leg and get down to the important business of finding them… and making the necessary arrangements with their suppliers. And don’t wait to do this… you should spend a part of every day discovering, reviewing and adding new products to your website.
Check all your business supplies.
Have you got toner and paper aplenty for your printer? What about business cards, stationery, envelopes, checks, pens and file folders? (I am always running out of these).
Review everything you need. You don’t want to be caught short, scrambling to re-up when you should be focusing, always focusing, on SALES.
9) Let your customers know your fall availability is dwindling.
If you provide a specialized service where you can only handle so many customers at a time, notify your prospects and established customers at once that your availability is shrinking and that they need to book time for your service now.
Send a reminder to these folks every other week or so until you have no further appointments left and are in waiting list mode. Always make it clear just how little time remains; scarcity motivates even the worst procrastinators to act.
10) Review your personnel requirements. Remember you can’t do everything yourself… too much to do, way too little time in which to do it. Make sure you have the help you need and that you and they are both clear on what needs to be done and whether your help will be available to assist.
Remember, if you need extra help, advertise early to find and train it, so everything moves smoothly when you need it to do so.
Last words.
Every successful person I know is a planning fanatic. I’m one myself. Planning (and this includes reviewing and updating your plan as necessary) is a must… especially before the crucial fall sales season.
After you’ve advanced your plan today, by all means spruce yourself up, put on that poplin jacket and the eye-catching chapeau and white duck trousers or navy blue skirt and blouse with mutton sleeves. It’s time for you to mix and mingle for you have places to go and people to meet… After all, everyone wants to make the acquaintance of a likely comer like you, always so organized, efficient, and productive. And that’s a very good sign…. in the good old summertime… or any other time!

Canada’s Liberal Party crushed as Michael Ignatieff takes them to historic defeat May 2, 2011. The real question is why they let him try….

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
?Here is the music to celebrate the “defeat” of Mr. Ignatieff. Should it be celebrated? Well not as to his politics, but as to his experience. Dr. Lant went to school with the lad. See what he has to say below.
Author’s note: Michael Ignatieff and I were classmates at Harvard University. We were in the same “track” together, Modern European History. Each week for a year (1969-1970) we gathered for the colloquium which enabled H. Stuart Hughes, chairman of the History Department, to scrutinize us and decide who would advance to the Ph.D. program and who would be given the terminal Master’s Degree. Our class consisted of just a dozen students, or less. We came to know each other very well… He smoked gold tipped Sobranie, the Russian word for “‘sovereign” (current price $55 for 200)… his cigarette always a prop in his presentation.
Count Michael.
If there were any justice in the world, Michael Georgevitch Ignatieff would be waking up this morning on his wide acres near Smolensk as Count Michael, his paternal grandfather Count Pavel Ignatieff, the Russian Minister of Education during the First World War, grandson of Princess Natasha Mestchersky. But in 1917, the acres, the grand estates and country houses, the privileges and baubles from the Tsar, even the Tsar himself were all swept away… still, you will never understand Michael Ignatieff if you do not understand that he is a Russian aristocrat to his very fingers…. and that he longs for a world that was once his… a world long ago and far away from Canada. It’s all there in his 1987 book “The Russian Album”, which that year won the Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction.
Born May 12, 1947
Ignatieff was born in Toronto, elder son of Russian-born Canadian diplomat (Count) George Ignatieff and his Canadian-born wife, Jessie Alison (nee Grant). His childhood was peripatetic as his father moved up the diplomatic ranks, ultimately becoming chief of staff to Prime Minister Lester Pearson. Michael Ignatieff got used to being around important people and their privileged lives. He became adept at the great game of moving up, by pleasing the influential, being in the right place at the right time, and always considering which move to make and when to make it. Every glittering prize in the world was available if you knew how to get it… and Michael Ignatieff was eager to learn…
He studied history at the University of Toronto’s Trinity College (B.A., 1969) where Bob Rae was his debating partner and fourth-year roommate. (Rae went on to become Ontario’s 21st premier 1990-1995 and one of the few Liberals to survive the debacle under Ignatieff.)
Restless, always in motion.
Ignatieff moved on again…. this time to Oxford University where he studied with celebrated liberal philosopher Sir Isaiah Berlin about whom he would later write. Then Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he earned his PhD in 1976. Then the University of British Columbia (assistant professor from 1976 to 1978)…. then senior research fellow at King’s College, Cambridge until 1984. He then moved to London where he began to focus on his career as writer and journalist.
It was impressive, it was distinguished, it was rootless… and it was certainly not the standard career path of a politician who needed to understand and connect with real people and their everyday concerns. Michael Ignatieff’s career was becoming as recherche as his cigarettes… rare, exquisite, far-fetched. This would have been fine… except he hankered after political office and political power… and the plaudits and esteem which only come when one is the demonstrated “People’s Choice”. But could he get there by writing himself into power… without submitting himself to the messy business of politics? Could he reach the top of the greasy pole (as British statesman Benjamin Disraeli called it) by being wafted there and without a drop of grease on his refined, fastidious person?
That was Michael Ignatieff’s most astonishing idea of all…
Was there a precedent in the politics of Canada, Britain, or the United States of a man who went for the highest of offices without learning the craft of politics and the messy business of working with people from the grassroots up? In due course, perhaps Ignatief arrived at Woodrow Wilson, as prolific a writer and academic as Ignatieff himself, professor and then President of Princeton University.
But even Woodrow Wilson had served as elected Governor of New Jersey (1911-1913). Though Wilson’s was a troubled presidency, still it was the closest precedent to hand. Michael Ignatieff meant to improve upon it… becoming Prime Minister of Canada without administrative, executive or foreign policy experience, having been elected just twice as a Member of Parliament… and without the most important thing of all: the proven ability to arouse, enthuse, lead the people.
That he should believe it is perfectly understandable; (people can after all persuade themselves about anything). That he got the leaders of the greatest of Canadian political parties to believe it is… remarkable, incredible, mad.
Yet that is precisely what happened when in 2004 three Liberal organizers, former Liberal candidate Alfred Apps, Ian Davey (son of Senator Keith Davey) and lawyer Daniel Brock traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts (where Ignatieff held a professorship at Harvard) and persuaded him to move back to Canada and consider a bid for the Liberal leadership (should Paul Martin retire) and then Prime Minister. The tailors had done their work and now the Emperor with no clothes was ready for his unique, historic journey. Paul Martin did iretire the Liberal Party leadership after the Liberal government was defeated in the January 2006 federal election… and the poobahs of the defeated party were persuaded that no experience was the best experience… that no leadership skills were the best skills to lead… and that a man who so loved and venerated Canada that he sought every opportunity to leave her… that this was the best man in the nation to be Prime Minister of a great people.
Oh! Ignatieff!
But if the leaders of the Liberal Party (who ultimately anointed Ignatieff as their unproven paladin) believed Count Michael’s mythology, the people of Canada did not. They called it as they saw it, and they knew, like the unnamed boy in the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the emperor had no clothes, or anything else except the desire to start at the top, accepting obeisance. It was one of the most fatuous of political ideas ever perpetrated. And handed unprecedented victory to Conservative Stephen Harper. And unprecedented, abject defeat to the Liberals who forgot, with Ignatieff, the very heart of their principles: that governments are of the people, by the people, for the people… and of leaders who work a lifetime to understand those people and serve them.
As for Michael Ignatieff, who presided over the Liberal’s greatest, unprecedented defeat? He hinted he could be persuaded, if properly asked, to stay on as leader. No takers, there. And then he went before the nation and petulantly lambasted his opponents for questioning his attachment to Canada and his patriotism, still not understanding the rambunctious game of politics, a blood sport, not the coronation he expected. It was “their” fault Canadians were deprived of such a man as he. No doubt Count Michael will make his exhaustive case in his next book, which will be written anywhere else than the Canada he loves so much…

Osama bin Laden has been killed and we say Hallelujah!

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

I am not a violent man but I have waited, with all Americans, for the violent end to one man of consummate evil, Osama bin Laden… and now — at long last — his end has come and my heart beats quicker and in gratitude to the people who have done this worthy deed and rid the world of the man whose face was the face of death.
The facts.
For years, the CIA had been monitoring an al-Qaida courier. They knew he was important because detainees told investigators he was profoundly trusted by bin Laden and might very well be living with bin Laden. Last August, as a result of monitoring this courier, intelligence officials got a break. The courier arrived at a highly fortified compound nestled in an affluent neighborhood of an affluent Pakistani town two hours outside Islamabad.
Everything about this compound suggested some nefarious purpose. It was surrounded by walls as high as 18 feet, topped with barbed wire. Two security posts were the only way in. A third-floor terrace was shielded by a seven-foot privacy wall. No phone lines or Internet cables ran to the property. The residents burned their garbage rather than put it out for collection. Intelligence officials came to believe that this highly distinctive compound was built about 5 years ago at a cost of about one million dollars for a person of consequence in al-Qaida.. The question now was who that person of consequence might be.
Increasingly, after innumerable reviews of the compound and everything known about it, intelligence officials came to believe that the compound was bin Laden’s… but for this most important of covert operations there could not be any error of any kind. Americans, they knew, had to have success, total success from this mission… and that’s precisely what these officials aimed to give an aggrieved, long-suffering, and patient nation.
And so they did their important work, their painstaking work, their essential work so that when they did what they must do they would be completely successful, and Osama bin Laden would not escape yet again.
Absolute certainty required.
By mid-February, intelligence from multiple sources was clear enough to enable President Obama to “pursue an aggressive course of action.” During the next two and a half months, Obama led five meetings of the National Security Council focused solely on whether bin Laden was in that compound and, if so, how to get him.
Everyone was agreed from the President on down: this time there must be complete success…
And so, first of all, just who had access to this growing body of intelligence was drastically limited. Our closest allies — Britain, Canada, Australia, etc. — are ordinarily in the loop… but not this time. Too, the United States does not normally carry out ground operations inside Pakistan without collaboration from Pakistani intelligence. But this was the ultimate covert operation and what was “normal” in such matters was not good enough.
There had to be total success; everything had to be done right… the first time.
April 29, 2011. The President approved the operation to kill Osama bin Laden and the countdown to vengeance began.
For this most important of missions, Obama went with real people instead of our sophisticated Predator drones. President Obama entrusted the honor of America to some of America’s finest, the elite Navy SEAL Team Six under the command of CIA Director Leon Panetta. The names of team members have not (so far) been released… but they have well and truly earned the gratitude of the nation.
A fiery end, a bullet to the head.
In the dead of night, helicopters descended out of darkness to deliver Armageddon. One can imagine the event.
The inhabitants of the compound would have awakened, drowsy and disoriented, to their worst nightmare. Coming for them, every one of them, were the deliverers of promised retribution… the representatives of a great nation delivering at last what every citizen of that nation wanted: Revenge! Retaliation! Justice!
Unimaginable horror scarred the night skies as, one by one, the representatives of al-Qaida fell… the courier who lead the CIA to this place… bin Laden’s brother… his son… and the man of practised and unfathomable evil Osama bin Laden himself… one blessed bullet into the brain that brought so much undeserved pain to so many.
This was the man whose hatred created, on the fateful day of September 11, profound misery; a man who turned happy children from happy homes into orphans… a wicked man who tore wives from husbands and husbands from wives… a man who turned doting grandparents into crazed people mad with despair… asking a single question over and over again: “Why?” What had so many innocent people done to deserve so much….
And so, even as the Twin Towers fell, even as a great nation reeled and wept… the sentiment took root that the perpetrator of this great evil must be found and punished.
And that day of righteous punishment came — May 1, 2011.
Buried according to Islamic practice and tradition.
The bodies of Osama’s victims were buried in the burning debris of the once majestic towers, the very symbols of our greatest city. The bravest of the brave found these bodies and gave them the most reverential burials. We gave the remains of bin Laden the same high respect… burying him with decency and full honors, so that no one could say we treated him with the deep contempt with which he treated us. Here, as so often, we rose above… to behave with the deep decency which is the core of who we are.
An incident, not the end.
I am not, as I said, a violent man; I often wonder why we humans seem to need, even crave, so much of it. But of this I am sure: the total eradication of this man was needed, warranted, and beneficial. His misguided followers, now disoriented and dismayed, will turn the man into a martyr, but they will be wrong to do so. His twisted perspective hurts them, too, and can deliver nothing more than more infernos and more pain.
That is why we must continue to be vigilant. One bullet is not the end… but that bullet surely marks the end of the chapter which began September 11, 2001.
It is a beautiful day here in Cambridge, Massachusetts… the kind of day that makes one glad to be alive. I intend to go, in a minute, into the sparkling air and the brilliant sunshine… to say a little prayer for the victims, our honored dead… and hope their spirits may now rest more easily, abiding forever in the Peace of God they came to know too soon.

Advice on what makes business blogs work by three who know: George Kosch, Sandi Hunter and Dr. Jeffrey Lant.

Does anyone know how to Blog? I try to follow all of the rules of the experts. Here are a few more hints from the pros. Follow the lead and if you want to publish THESE articles, go to www.TheIncomefaucet.com and sign up for 50,000 free visitors.
by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Today , April 19, 2011, is a special day for the three members of the Worldprofit blog writing team. Today we completed writing 200 business blog articles, a project which began in June, 2010. The response to these articles has been nothing short of spectacular, so we decided to discuss the reasons why this has occurred and what it means  for you and your business blog.
1) Be clear on the objective.
We are focusing this article on blogs created by businesses. Their objective is simple: make money. No business blog should ever be created which has some supposedly “better” purpose. It’s easy to forget this purpose; it doesn’t take much to unfocus a blog. That’s why we suggest posting this message prominently in your office: “It’s the money, silly.” A variation of this message helped Billl Clinton (a notoriously diffuse individual) from going off  theme and was influential in putting him in the Oval Office. This message will also work for you.
2) Designate a good writer to produce your blog’s content.
Business blog copy must be clean, clear, accurate. That means designating a writer with business writing experience. An experienced copywriter is perfect. They know how to write copy that sells… which is just the copy you need.
3) If you cannot find a copywriter,  become that copywriter yourself.
Successful copy is based on just 4 important words:
YOU GET BENEFIT NOW.
The “you” is your reader, the person you need your blog copy to motivate to contact you.
“get” is there to remind you that copy is always about what the reader (your past, present and future customer) gets from you.
“benefit” is the specific thing they get from each article you publish.
“now” is when you want the reader to respond, reminding yourself that there must always be one or more offers in each blog issue, such offers being intended to stimulate the immediate reader response which must always be your objective.
4) Master search engines.
Writing business blogs means finding and using a never ending supply of data, information, research findings, quotations of note, etc. Blogs eat up lots and lots of information.
This means becoming expert at finding pertinent data from search engines. Surprisingly we discovered that many business blog writers do not use and therefore do now know how to ensure best results from search engines.  That problem must be recognized and overcome ASAP.
Successful business writers know how to write articles with data “holes” in them, “holes” they can quickly fill by accessing search engines… without ever leaving the computer. Given the fact that not so many years ago, business writers had to use specialized business libraries, a cumbersome process at best, search engines have made all the difference in getting important data quickly and easily, all at your fingertips.
5) Always have a lead article, the focus of each individual issue.
We have found in practice that each blog issue should be anchored by a major article. The length we recommend is 1,500 words.
This article should be divided into two distinct parts; first, the actual content itself. Second, pertinent follow-up details which advise your reader what is available, its benefits, and how to get it. These follow-up details are crucial and must follow each article. (See below for an example.)
How long does it take for such an article to be researched, written, edited, etc.? Obviously that depends on the amount of research you must do, how quickly you find it, your own skills and speed as a writer, etc. However, we have found that this “anchor” article takes on average 4-8 hours.
6) Always have a “new uses” feature.
You’ve all heard the old adage, “sell the sizzle, not the steak”. That’s why you need a “new uses” feature. Select any of your products and services; then provide at least one detailed blog article on how to get the great results from its use. Remember, people buy products too achieve results; the more practical uses you detail, the more sales you make.
7) Always include customer testimonials, particularly testimonials that provide details on what individual customers did and their positive results.
Customer testimonials work. Thus, make sure you always include one or more in each blog issue. And always make a point in each blog of asking your customers to provide more.
8) Have a “new product” feature… and, as above, ensure the copy focuses on what it does, that “sizzle” again.
Remember, blog copy is about making money by generating reader inquiries and sales. Your readers are glad to read about new products to the extent that the copy introducing them focuses on what the customer gets.
9) Set and keep a fixed blog publishing schedule.
Your readers should expect to see your blog, like clock work, on a published schedule. They should be trained to look forward to it and respond. But if your publishing schedule is erratic, unpredictable, then your reputation will not be enhanced and your sales will definitely suffer. Ouch!
Once you’ve set the schedule, treat it religiously.
10) Always include a very special offer in every issue.
Make it a truly spectacular offer… one available to blog readers only.
Position this offer prominently. It is, after all, eye-popping.
Last words.
Blogs in general and business blogs in particular are here to stay. Businesses without them are businesses that suffer, having thereby circumscribed sales and growth. Make sure that isn’t you.
One last piece of advice: Make your blog fun read and ALWAYS easy to respond to. If you follow these instructions, your blog will steadily grow in importance as a readily available source of customers and profits. As we can tell you from personal experience, what blogs deliver will truly delight, excite, and enthuse you. A steady stream of new customers and enhanced profits tend to do that…. Get started today and see for yourself.

‘And yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.’ (Matthew 6:28) Easter Lilly, 2011

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
?????A great article on Easter. Creates a feeling of calm- the entire article is a must. Here is some music to get  you in the right mood!

It is today Easter Sunday. Easter came late this year, April 24. And it came into a world that was dismayed by our elusive springtime; temperatures low, hints of snow and even some late flakes, and the bone chilling winds that convince you January has never left, though in fact it is 55 degrees in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
My house is awash with flowers, many more than usual. I saw some lovely orchids at Shaw’s market in Porter Square; they were reasonably priced, too. And so then having nothing blooming inside, I brought them home. It is now two weeks and a couple days since I acquired them; they are faded now, of course. But  they still have traces, and proudly too, of the tasteful colors that made me snatch them up.
Doyle Taylor, a perceptive friend, saw that I was preoccupied one recent day and tended to be more caustic than usual. Doyle is a man who not merely believes in saying it with flowers but doing so promptly with a most thoughtful card signed by him and his new wife Casey. They were high school sweethearts who lost touch, married others… then after fate had dealt with them, rediscovered and married each other. They are charming, intelligent, delightful. One can never know too many such but life delivers them sparingly.
Then there is  my most recent floral acquisition, the mandatory (for some) Easter Lily. I got it only yesterday (when I inquired a week ago I was told they came in only a few days before the holiday. It has one  flower open and many buds promising  good value and good looks, too. It is of this plant and its Easter Lily — Lilium longiflorum — that I wish to speak for it is, verily, the  symbol  of the day and its world-changing events.
Many Easter lilies, not just one.
We speak in common parlance, as people do, of an “Easter lily,” but in fact there are several such. First, of course, lilium longiflorum, the clear winner of the name by its indisputable commercial prowess.
Following far behind in popularity, use, and commercial value is  Zantedeschia aethoipca, not a true lily at all, commonly called Lily of the Nile, Calla lily or Arum lily, native to southern Africa. Then Lilium candidum, commonly called the Madonna Lily, native to the Balkans and West Asia. Zephyranthes atamasco, commonly called Atamasco Lily or Rain Lily, native to the southwestern United States… then (you never guessed) daffodils, the daffs we love being lilies after all.
Where did Easter lilies come from?
Ever hear of the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan? That’s where today’s Easter lilies originate. And therein lies an important fact about why this industry was once dominated by Japan… and why today it is almost completely American. World War II was the transforming event.
Prior to 1941, the majority of Easter lily bulbs were exported to the United States from Japan. World War II changed everything. Today 95% of all bulbs grown for the potted Easter lily market are not only produced in the United States, but more surprisingly within a narrow coastal region straddling the California-Oregon border, from Smith River, California up to Brookings, Oregon. It gets even more interesting; just 10 farms in this area produce almost all Easter lily bulbs in the US of A. Unsurprisingly these farms have dubbed themselves collectively the “Easter Lily Capital of the World.”
An industry completely changed by one man and one bulb.
One man made a huge difference to this US dominance of the Easter Lily and how it looks today. That man was Louis Houghton who brought a suitcase full of hybrid lily bulbs to the south coast of Oregon in 1919. These he freely distributed certain that the weather and environment were perfect for the cultivation of a superior bulb to that grown by the Japanese. When WW II cut off Americans from the Easter lilies which were an integral part of religious services, Houghton was given his big chance on a silver platter.
He was successful beyond his wildest imaginings. By 1945 there were about 1,200 growers producing bulbs up and down the Pacific Coast, from Vancouver, Canada to Long Beach, California. The early comers profited for a time as the price of lily bulbs skyrocketed. It reminded some of the Dutch “tulip mania” of the 17th century, where a single tulip bulb cost the annual wages of 10 skilled crafts people. Were Easter lily bulbs next? A small army of lily farmers bet the ranch on it… and failed. The number of Easter lily producing farms steadily dropped; today there are just 10… comfortably dividing up the proceeds.
The Nellie White.
James White was one of the successful Easter lily producers. However, he thought the elimination of Japan (and its too small lilies) opened the door for other improvements, too. He wanted to end the dominance of the “White Gold” bulb… and significantly improve the look of Easter lilies with an entirely new bulb… in due course named after White’s wife, Nellie. Today the “Nellie White” dominates the U.S. market and thus the entire Easter lily business. One crucial thing in season can completely change any industry, and no one in business should ever forget that.
More about the Easter lily business.
One major reason why so many Easter lily producers closed was the considerable difficulty in growing and managing the plants themselves. First, Easter lily bulbs must be cultivated in the fields for three, sometimes four, years, before they are ready to be shipped to commercial greenhouse growers. During these years the bulbs are never dormant and require constant care and attention to assure superior quality and cleanliness. Each bulb is handled up to 40 times before it is ready to be shipped. And remember the commercial selling season is just two weeks annually at the time of Easter (the date for which changes annually)… and all Easter lilies must be ready and should ideally have at least one flower open, the better to showcase the thing that matters most of all to everyone who sees this stately, evocative plant: the Easter lily itself. It is astonishingly elegant, dramatic, the very essence of purity. As such Jesus saw fit to use this favored plant as a means of quieting nervous Christians.
The Sermon on the Mount.
Of the many seminal moments in the brief ministry of Jesus Christ on earth, the Sermon on the Mount needs special attention. It was given in about AD 30 and contains one essential element of the Christian religion after another, including this reassuring sentiment to believers:
“Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”
And so Jesus turned a glorious flower into a symbol of God’s love for and protection of even erring people. Thus, when you attend Easter services today or any day and see the unforgettable white trumpet-like flowers of the Easter lily, you are seeing an apt symbol and manifestation of a love that can be ours and eternal.

For royal wedding guests of Prince William and his Kate, April 29, 2011 a list of does and don’ts, especially the latter.

Here is another great article about the history of the royal family!!!

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
By now I am sure you are aware that April 29, 2011 is a very special day in the prodigious annals of the British monarchy. H.R.H. Prince William, white hope of the dynasty, marries his Kate… and his grandmama The Sovereign is adamant that all be done just so — or else.
Sadly, you have not been invited. Admittedly it is abashing, even humiliating. But you will be glad to know that the lot of the those precious few invited is not a bed of roses. The empire on which the sun never set is history, but protocol, the right thing done in the right way, is very much alive chez Windsor.
Let’s take a look.
The Windsors are nothing if not keen on pageants that are meticulously planned and flawlessly carried out. They know that it was not always thus in royal ceremonial. One way they know this was by careful scrutiny of my first book “Insubstantial Pageant: Ceremony and Confusion at Queen Victoria’s Court”. (1979). I was the first American ever granted access to the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle… and it was part of the deal that The Queen and Prince Charles get advance copies to increase their knowledge of the hopeless mismanagement of ceremonies by their regal ancestors.
Confusions, muddles, and disorganizations were the order of the day. It was supremely frustrating, irritating, and inexcusable that the English made so many mistakes, even lethal, in presenting the monarchy to the nation. Ceremonies of the highest significance and importance — coronations even — were so lamentably organized and delivered that the English monarchy became a byword for ineptitude.
We owe improvement to Prince Albert.
Queen Victoria, only 18 when she ascended the throne in 1837 had far better things to do than worry about ceremonial derelictions. For openers she was free of the heavy thrall of the Duchess of Kent, her mother; perhaps the ultimate controlling Stage Mother of all time. The first thing the new queen did was order her bed to be taken out of the bedroom she had shared all her life with her mother… then order dinner to be served to her alone, the first time that had ever happened. She was free, free at last! She was queen, her every wish a command instantly carried out. A few glaring mistakes in court ceremonial counted for nothing.
But the German princeling she married, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was very, very different. The insidious culture of royal errors and tolerance for same made him nervous, dyspeptic, and determined to apply Teutonic efficiency to the problem. He fumed, he fretted, he even wept at the minuscule progress. But there was progress. Just not enough of it.
As the grasping English built the largest empire ever assembled on this planet, their royal pageants continued to be notable for all the wrong reasons: they were lackadaisical about the protocol that consumed other royal houses; thereby causing endless hurt feelings. Their planning was always of the too little, too late variety. And like clockwork, security arrangements were so lax that every ceremony produced a bumper crop of dead, the victims of English inability to get it right… and without fatalities.
All this is no doubt known to Elizabeth II and the princes of her house and their constant motto is “Never again!” Thus, they are fastidious in the business of Getting It Right. When the English were a great nation, the sovereigns themselves were scarcely punctilious about such matters; but with only the shadow of empire remaining, they are all adamant that the royal ceremonies, in which they so prominently feature, be the very essence of polished perfection.
Hence the list of do’s and don’ts now circulating amongst the honored guests, be they princes of the blood royal or (that democratic touch the royals are close to perfecting) personnel from the various charities patronized by the bride and groom. In Windsor eyes there is really no difference between them. For them there are, after all, only two ranks: Sovereign… and the rest.
Now to the various admonitions, politely phrased of course as suggestions, recommendations. But they are in fact royal commands and must be treated as such.
1) Don’t give the queen a friendly hug. Michelle Obama, First Lady of these United States did something akin to that and the royal reaction was a tad below frosty.
2) Don’t tweet. You are attending an historic event. Curtail all distractions.
3) Be on time. On this of all days, there is no such thing as fashionably late, even by a minute. The Queen is the last person to take her place; to upstage her is lese majeste, intolerable.
4) Ladies, select an outfit that blends in. You should wear a dress — not too short, not too skimpy, and certainly not white. Most British women will complete the unmistakable (rather frumpy) look that screams “We’re English!” with a hat or a fascinator — a small feathered or jewelled hairpiece attached to a clip or a comb.
More politely disguised commands.
5) Leave your cellphone in the car. No one wants your ring tone to the tune of “The Stripper” to be part of the record.
6) Make sure you have all necessary medications with you. You need to know that no one, absolutely no one, will facilitate your egress to get them… and you will not be allowed to return either.
7) Visit the facilities as often as necessary to ensure bladder control. This means limiting liquids, just as you’d do for a colonoscopy, a not inapt comparison. (Avoid the solution adopted by one ceremony attending gent. He brought a soft drink bottle and used it like a chamber pot. The name of the perpetrator and the incident itself was immediately classified.)
“I didn’t really want to go anyway.”
Upon reading these guidelines and rules, you may say, and actually believe, that you didn’t really want to go to this critical event of “Rule Britannia.”
But we’re kidding ourselves, aren’t we? For the chance to see Prince William and be able to tell your non-invited neighbor that he’s taller than he looks on telly is just too good to pass up. Not to mention the bride, and wasn’t she lovely?
Indeed, to secure lifetime bragging rights because we were well and truly invited, we’d all, if ordered, go naked with a full body search to boot. Honi soit qui mal y pense.
