Of Jay Severin dismissed, Voltaire, WTKK-FM, and hypocrisy.

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
It’s usually at night that bats, creepy crawlies, and radio shock jocks come out. Of these by far the most noxious are the shock jocks… and of these Jay Severin is one of the worst; meaning he is one of the best.
First, the facts.
James Thompson Severino, professionally known as Jay Severin, has  a plum position: he is paid almost a cool million a year to go on air and hurt, verbally maim, shred, destroy, demean, pulverize, abash, humiliate. When you listen to Jay and his ilk what you want is maximum pain for the maximum number. You want it raw, fast, funny, stomach churning. And you want it now!
Jay, a pig of a fellow, obliges.
He’s called Mexican immigrants “primitives,” “leeches,” and exporters of “women with mustaches and VD.”
He’s called the Reverend Jesse Jackson a “pimp, a race hustler.”
He’s called Hillary Clinton something gross and offensive, deliberately, without qualification or regret.
He’s said that in his rarefied world “the poor and stupid would starve.”
Jay’s job was about dishing out this cretinous rubbish night in, night out, anything to keep listeners frozen to the dial, expectantly waiting for his next outrageous stink bomb. It was always on the way…
From time to time, his employers at WTKK-FM radio determined that he had transgressed some arbitrary line separating “acceptable” verbal slogging and slops from the “unacceptable.”   As a result, Jay would do his usual potty-mouth routine for a while; then say some “no no” (no worse than his usual stock in trade) that would result in suspension by his suddenly sanctimonious employers, all incense and Ave Maria.
These latter-day purists would chastise Jay, take him off the air, reprimand him, fine him, and return him to insult another day. Such folks clearly wanted to eat their rancid cake and keep it, too. It was a well recognized game in the industry.
First, WTKK-FM wants you to know that they are purveyors of the very best in on-air content; they are good corporate citizens, too. But there is the flip side of that coin. They can, without missing a beat, talk about high standards and merit awards on the one hand… while giving Jay Severin’s always hurtful remarks the widest possible play on the other.
Having raked in the money for a while with Jay’s utterly tasteless remarks, his employers, citing one of these remarks no more repulsive than the rest, intervene, pooh-pooh the matter, cite their non-existent community standards, fine the bugger, take him off the air for a time… then return him for more. It’s a dance… and it is well known to all the participants.
Problem is, the times they are a-changing.
There is reason to hope and to believe that the “glory days” of Jay Severin and his kind are waning. There is so much pain in the world these days; so much real tragedy, so many people in despair without hope, that we really need to ask ourselves whether we truly need artificially engendered pain dished out by jerks like Severin? Haven’t we got more than our share of miseries without him?
That argument, powerful though it is, wouldn’t begin to cut the mustard at WTKK-FM radio or anywhere else, if Severin’s ratings were through the roof, generating the really big bucks. They’d let him insult, abuse, degrade all the way to the bank.
However, to the consternation of the hotshots at WTKK-FM purveying filth and slime hasn’t delivered the audiences of ancient days. Both crucial ratings and more crucial revenues are down, down, down, with no sign of a turn- around coming anytime soon.
Thus WTKK-FM had a problem. They liked Jay, they loved Jay when he was the golden boy, for all that he was stupid, ignorant, a bully. What did that matter when the money was rolling in? But it was an entirely different matter when it slowed to a comparative trickle.
The corporate big shots didn’t like the idea of admitting they had misread the trends by keeping Jay (now old hat) on longer than warranted. That would have made them look like they goofed, and no executive likes that when there’s a likely scapegoat at hand, Jay himself.
First, understand that no one but no one actually ever liked Jay. To the senior execs at WTKK-FM he was a necessary evil; tolerated but that’s all. The truth is, he was a trained dog, hired to do a job that was distasteful to virtually everyone concerned with it but who were, in the heady days, all in on the take. It was sordid… it was disgraceful… it was never anything other than filth. It was, and is, the American way at our all too frequent worst.
Just the other day, Jay was being Jay (tasteless, boorish, bombastic), talking about a lawsuit involving a CEO who is being sued for sexual harassment by former female employees. Severin called the women “whores and liars” and said they belong in jail. He also said he didn’t understood what all the fuss was about, telling his listeners that as a former company owner, he had hired “mostly attractive young women” and had sex with nearly all of them over two decades.
The folks at WTKK-FM, glancing at the ratings and revenues, discovered they had an “appropriate level of civility” and that Jay has affronted it. They fired him pronto… letting the world know that Jay, the voice of the gutter, no longer had a place on the schedule of their suddenly simon-pure institution. How they could have said and published this with a straight face is anyone’s guess.
Jay, of course, will probably sue them; he will in any event turn up somewhere amongst other folks working to spin slime into profits. But let’s be real clear on this: had his remarks increased ratings, he’d still be spouting on air today. And because we value the First Amendment, we’d all have to support  him in the exercise of his free speech; support him, yes, but always change the dial. For, like Voltaire, I defend his right to say it…. I also value my right not to hear it.

Thoughts upon the latest acquisition to my collection, a portrait of Joseph II, emperor of Austria, patron of Mozart.

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
I am now at the stage of life and collecting where I am looking for quite specific things. These things must either fill a gap in my collection or expand the collection in a new way, but related to what it already contains.
Items must also have the undeniable “wow” factor, the je ne sais quoi which is so hard to explain in words but so easy to see in person.
Oh, yes, one more  thing: the price must be, if not a bargain, then most attractive, so that one can justify, yet again, exceeding one’s (always too meager) budget.
Imperial Hapsburg portrait.
My latest acquisition, a fine portrait of Austrian emperor Joseph II by Josef Hickel, fills all these criteria, but for the price, for I admit I did exceed my budget. I am chagrined, of course, but realistic. The auction market which has been so attractive for purchasing during the great recession now over is now most healthy again. Just as I got bargain after bargain during that recession, so I must logically expect to pay more now that that once-in-a- lifetime buying opportunity has waned.
I expect you’d like to see this picture.
Go to the website of the auction house, Vienna’s celebrated Dorotheum in business since 1707. You’ll find it at dorotheum.com
Once there find the entry for the Alte Meister (Old Master) pictures sale, Part I, 13 April, 2011,  lot  473. Be sure to click on the link that increases the size of what you see.
Here are the facts about this picture:
Josef Hickel (born Bohmisch-Leipa/Bohemia, 1736; died Vienna, 1807).
Portrait of Emperor Joseph II in a Chevaux Legers uniform, with the Order of the Golden Fleece set with brilliants; the Order of Maria Theresa and the Order of Saint Stephen. Oil on copper, oval 32 x 26 cm, framed.
About the painter and his picture.
Josef Hickel was court painter to Empress Maria Theresa, for whom he portrayed numerous high-ranking personalities. In 1769 he was appointed a member of the Florentine Academy. In Vienna, where he was likewise affiliated with the Academy, he was repeatedly commissioned to paint Emperor Joseph II and portrayed him at least five times. He left altogether more than 3,000 portraits. The present painting depends on contemporary English portraiture, a typical feature of which is the hint of a clouded sky in the background, so that the sovereign, in contract to the meticulous rendering of his appearance, is placed against the limitless expanse of space in order to augment his significance.
These are the bare facts.  Now, as every serious collector knows, the real work begins.
Every collector is an  historian and needs to act like one.
Understand that every picture, and every other collectible artifact for that matter, is an aperture into the past, a way of seeing and understanding days gone by while building a collection of significance.
My involvement with this lot began when I was in high school in the mid 1960s. There for the first time I became aware of Josef Hickel, but as celebrated artist father of a celebrated artist son, Karl Anton Hickel. Hickel fils’ portrait of the English early 19th century statesman Charles James Fox was pictured in a book for a project about Fox’s oratory.  (Charles James Fox: A Man for the  People, author  Loren Reid, 1969) That picture was most assuredly not in the grand tradition. It showed Fox very much as his contemporaries saw him: overweight, unkempt, hat askew, undeniably the most charming and popular man of his age. This was a Fox captured by a Hickel. Hickel pere and fils thus became must-have names on my list of desirable acquisitions.
Do you have such a list of the desirable painters, silver smiths, seat furniture craftsmen etc that you would like to have? You must. These lists are invaluable as you consider new acquisitions and, for that matter, as you de-acquisition because you have outgrown various items, styles, and craftspeople.
Because this list is very important, you must start it as early as possible and constantly work to keep it up to date.
Why Joseph II? (1741-1790).
For hundreds of years the Hapsburgs, in all their various manifestations and titles, more often than not Holy Roman Emperors, guarded Europe from menacing Turks, Russians, Slavs, and more. They were an essential cog in the wheel of European civilization. Indeed, so important were the Austrian and their sprawling possessions that had they not have existed, they would have had to be invented.
Their capital was Vienna, and there one emperor after another left his signature on a metropolis fit for a monarchy sanctioned by God, Holy and Apostolic. Joseph II thus became the Vicegerent of God on earth… and he acted accordingly… not least in turning Vienna into the cultural capital of Europe. A bumptious lad with egregious ego, dripping with disdain for the less gifted, aimed for Vienna, too. His name was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (born 1756). He was a handful even for the emperor himself.
However, when I look at my imperial portrait, I see the man who gave Mozart his first great break: commissioning from him the first opera in the German language, the masterwork which came to be known as “The Abduction from the Seraglio.” Mozart, whose genius was greater than the empire itself, was ungrateful, of course. That is the cross even emperors must bear.
By the way, I feel honor bound to set the record straight on two standing charges against Joseph II,
1) that he told Mozart that “The Abduction…” had too many notes, Mozart immediately telling His Imperial Majesty it had just the number it needed. This story is most likely apocryphal, though it is clear Joseph II never did figure out how to treat the potty-mouthed boy who wrote with the voice of God Himself.
2) Mozart was not dumped in a common pauper’s grave. Joseph II, enlightened monarch, wished to cut the giant expenditures his subjects spent on unproductive funerals. He ordered all bodies be thrown in common pits to be covered with flesh-dissolving lime. And so it was with Mozart.
Now I am  part of the story.
This fine picture, still in Vienna, willl shortly to go to my conservator Simon Gillespie in London. For over 20 years now, he has taken the merely excellent and with unsurpassed talent turned my pictures, all my pictures, into glorious History. Once they are here, I become part of the story… Improving, maintaining, preserving, augmenting. But make no mistake, they most assuredly own me, never the reverse. And I am proud, honored, content to have it so.

Admonition to myself: 11-hour workdays boost heart disease risk.

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
Actung! I am writing this article for myself… and for the legions of ultra-busy people who work 11 hours a day or more. We are the people who keep the world going… but to be able to do so, we need to stay healthy and alive.
On April 6, 2011 Bloomberg News reported that we’re at risk and need to take immediate action to minimize the problem.
The facts.
Adults who worked 11 hours a day or more had a 67 percent higher risk of developing coronary heart disease than those who worked eight hours, a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine reported (April 5, 2011). The researchers also found that by adding working hours to a standard heart attack risk assessment model, they could increase the accuracy of heart disease predictions by 5 percent.
Heart disease, the nation’s leading killer.
According to the National Institutes of Health, heart disease is the nation’s leading killer. More and more people succumb to it because more and more people are working more and more hours, making ours the least leisured generation ever, the one with the greatest challenges and risks.
Remarks by Mike Kivimaki, project lead researcher.
Current evidence on coronary heart disease prevention emphasizes the importance of focusing on the total risk rather than single risk factors. “People who work long hours should be particularly careful in following healthy diets, exercising sufficiently, and keeping their blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood glucose within healthy limits,” said project director Kivimaki.
Srihari Naidu, director of the Cardiac Catheteriization Laboratory at Winthrop University Hospital, Mineola, New York, said these data show that how people live — their stress levels, sleeping, eating, and exercise habits — can affect their risks for heart disease. “The choices we make in our lifestyle may have consequences,” Naidu said.
Study details.
The research followed 7,095 civil service workers in London who were ages 39 to 62 at the start of the trial. They were screened for heart disease every five years. The study found that 192 people developed heart disease over 12.3 years of follow up. Those who worked 10 hours a day had a 45 percent higher risk of heart disease than those who worked seven to eight hours.
Self-Talk for myself.
If you’re one of those people who work 10 hours plus a day, listen up. I’m one of you…. and like you I need to take such warnings with more seriousness. So, for me, for you, I’ve created a list which I intend to keep right next to my computer. You should, too….
1) Don’t ignore this warning, the way you’ve ignored previous warnings.
You’re no spring chicken; you’re getting older… and if you want to get older still, don’t just read these survey results… LIVE THEM!
The plain fact is, researchers have known for a long while the risk factors causing heart disease. You’ve seen, what, a few dozen warnings… and managed to ignore most of them, not the least of which comes from your physician as he urges you for the umteenth time to stop smoking.
Personal note: I don’t smoke cigarettes, never have. That’s a must for all those who value life over nicotine.
2) Get up and boogie.
I spend my entire, extended work day at the computer. To force myself to get up, I keep a list of peppy, jump-up music readily at hand. Who doesn’t want to get up and boogie when the song is Michael Jackson’s “Don’t stop ’til you get enough”…. or any other lively number that gets more than your feet moving.
Music on… jump up… and move that body.
Okay, so you’re not Fred Astaire. So what? Exercise and its benefits are for the do-er, not the watcher… and it’s your heart we want to keep in tip-top shape.
3) Walk.
Make it a point to walk, briskly too, at least 40 minutes a day.
Walk, too, every other chance you can… to the post office, the barber, to the local cinema. You know the advantages of walking; you’ve known them all your life. Now decide to do something. Leave the car at home… and walk.
4) Eat small portions more often.
The obesity phenomenon which was once pretty much an American affair has gone universal with a vengeance. Heart disease and excess pounds are, we know, related. But you can start solving this problem… today… by eating more often throughout the day but eating less.
Here, too, I bet you already know what to do…. you just aren’t doing it. So, vow to make changes now, exchanging those high sugar, high salt, high fat foods for celery and company.
Get over the “giving up” mentality. Replace with the “here’s what I’m getting” mentality. What you get here is plain: more of the distinctly limited time which is the most important thing you can get. Getting more time is the absolutely essential thing, and you have it within your power to get more of it.
Now for strictly work-related observations.
There are many reasons for working 10 hours a day or more. You might have hefty bills to pay and need the extra bucks. You might like the finer things of life. You might think yourself, and actually be, indispensable to your business. You might even be one of those who works hard to avoid the turbulence of unceasing family problems. Whatever your reason… enough is enough.
1) Review what you do, everything you do. What is essential and what merely desirable? It’s time to find and jettison what you can. Put your daily work life and activities under a microscope and scrutinize closely.
2) Got people who can help? Learn to delegate. No, these people will NEVER be as good at what you do as you are… but they’re there and good enough to assist. Besides, they can learn. Cutting back on one task or another may give them the chance to show what they can do to help you even more.
3) Ask yourself how much good you really do in your 10th or 11th hour on the job, where the principle of diminishing returns applies.
Can you legitimately postpone a task until tomorrow? Is the physical price you pay, the extra fatigue, not to mention cumulative health risks worth overworking today… when it could easily be done, and freshly so, tomorrow?
You determine your fate.
The ancient Greeks believed that Clotho spun the thread of life from her distaff onto her spindle; Lachesis measured the thread of life with her rod, and Athropos cut of the thread of life and chose the manner of a person’s death.
Now you have replaced them all… how much of life, even the matter of your death, is at the very least influenced by you. I want more of it… and I now vow to do everything to lengthen my thread, not curtail it. Will you join me? Lach haim.
